The inspiring true story behind Netflix’s ’23 000 Lives’

Netflix just welcomed a gripping new German-language movie, 23 000 Lives, to its library. But before viewers jump into their catalogue of curiosity, seeking immediate closure, we must clarify that the story at the centre of the moving drama is light-years away from fiction.

Premiered on July 17th, the Netflix Original movie follows a group of young, inexperienced activists from Berlin, who chose not to turn a blind eye to the Mediterranean migrant crisis that drowned countless voyagers trying to reach Europe.

23 000 Lives is about that group of Berliners, who, despite the lack of sea expedition or rescue-and-search experiences, refused to sit down and watch the tragedy unfold on the news. Instead, they launched a massive crowdfunding campaign to collect enough money to buy an old fishing vessel that they can ultimately use to save refugees.

The German movie tells the story of the search-and-rescue ship Iuventa, which made rounds in the central Mediterranean Sea over the span of two years in 2016 and 2017 before being seized by Italian authorities.

While it may sound stranger-than-fiction, the title refers to those hundreds of thousands of people who were saved by the Jugend rettet, AKA Youth to Rescue initiative.

23 000 Livescreation primarily centres on the becoming of Jugend rettet, a German non-profit developed in response to the Mediterranean migration crisis. Although the operation began as a much-needed rescue effort, it soon evolved into one of the most surveillance rescue operations in Europe.

According to the organisation, more than 23,000 people were rescued over the course of multiple missions. That said, in separate reports about the organisation, the number is mentioned to be lower. The crew was awarded the Amnesty International Human Rights Prize in 2020 for rescuing 14,000 people, per DW.

The Netflix movie also explores the rescue operation’s transformation into a legal battle after the ship’s seizure in 2017, which resulted in a years-long trial before coming to a decision.

Directed by Markus Goller, 23 000 Lives stars Louis Hofmann, whose most iconic Netflix credit includes Jonas’ portrayal in the breakout German sci-fi hit, Dark, as Lukas, the activist at the heart of the film. The film also features Maria Dragus, Mala Emde, Katharina Stark, Franka Potente, and Frederick Lau.
