‘The Hunting Wives’ ending explained: Who killed whom?
Netflix has always had a soft spot for crime dramas. But an erotic thriller was probably not on anyone’s bingo card this year. The Hunting Wives, which was dropped just this week on Netflix, is currently making waves with every eye on the killer on the loose. Like most crime thrillers do, The Hunting Wives, too, begins with a dead body. But what happens when the body count goes up?
The Hunting Wives starts with Sophie’s move to East Texas, where she attends an NRA fundraiser thrown by her husband’s boss and his wife, Margo. Although she is a square peg in a round hole, Margo ensures she has a friendly reception. As days go on, Sophie starts hunting and drinking with Margo, the sheriff’s wife, marksman Callie, and tiger mom Jill.
While she strains to belong, the group dynamic takes a dark turn when she starts an affair with Margo the night a teenage girl, Abby, is murdered in the woods. With the investigation sending townspeople on high alert, it’s not long before the women start the blame game. Determined to uncover the truth, Sophie slips into sleuth mode.
But before she can reveal her innocence, more bodies pile up one after another. However, we’ll address one murder at a time, starting with Abby.
Who killed Abby?
Abby’s murder investigation boils down to several suspects. But in reality, it’s Margo who does it all. Abby was always sceptical about the nature of the relationship Margo shares with her boyfriend, Brad, Jill’s son. When Pastor Pete informs Abby about Brad’s confession of her abortion, proof is in the pudding since she never had one.
On the night of July 18th, during a spin-off bottle party at Margo’s house, Abby went to confront her. Although Brad and Jamie left early, the fear of losing her affluent lifestyle and the news of her abortion coming out made Margo pull the trigger. But unfortunately, it was Sophie’s gun which killed Abby. However, this one murder investigation sends everyone into a spiral, and before you know it, Starr, Jill, and Kyle are dead.
Who killed Starr in The Hunting Wives?
Sophie goes into detective mode, knowing well that every sight is set on her in the aftermath of Abby’s murder. Just like Abby, she discovers from Pastor Pete about her alleged abortion. She goes ahead and tells Starr about it, leading the latter to confront Jill. From Starr’s perspective, Abby’s abortion could have ruined Jill’s family’s reputation. That alone could be the reason why Abby was murdered in the first place.
With her heart boiling for revenge, the confrontation ends up bloodied. But Jill shoots Starr before she can pull the trigger.
Then, who killed Jill?
When Margo and Callie go up to Jill’s place to confront her about her possible involvement with Abby’s death, they discover Starr’s body. The reason why they both trail Jill is that she was the last incoming call on Abby’s phone. As they both barge in despite Jill acting sick, they find Starr bleeding out and take a minute to decide whether to call the police. But as Jill takes matters into her hands, quickly putting a gun to Margo’s head, Callie takes the shot at her.
The case is closed with Jill convicted for both Abby and Starr’s murder, thanks to Brad’s revised statement. But Sophie? She’s still not done.
What does Sophie do?
Sophie’s last encounter with Margo is a turning point of The Hunting Wives. She was also among those who believed it was all Jill’s doing. But when she stumbled onto a box of tampons in Margo’s bathroom, the discrepancies between the first time she told Sophie she couldn’t use those at the fundraiser raised her eyebrows. The more Margo lies, the more Sophie looks up that those who have had an abortion recently are advised not to use them.
After connecting the dots, Sophie goes to confront Margo, making the latter turn to Kyle for help. As Kyle decides to tail her, he first tries to run her off the road. While he calms down and tries to discuss things, Sophie drives over him in panic mode. The Hunting Wives conclude with Sophie dumping Kyle’s body in the woods.
As for Pastor Pete? Detective Salazar traces back his footprints in Louisiana, and in an attempt to question him, she discovers him on the run. Pete kills himself before the officers can arrest him. And his U-haul trailer thankfully leads to the discovery of Abby’s best friend, Nina and Kaycee, the girl who went missing six months ago.
