The five perfect movies to watch on a Sunday
One of the best parts of the modern cinematic era is that the audience wears their likes and dislikes on their coattails. But even if they don’t, in the streaming world, we have the Netflix weekly charts to help us get an idea.
With each passing day, as we inch closer to the New Year’s fireworks show, Netflix cinematic trends deck out in the festive glow associated with December. While the trendsetters are barely stagnant, the holiday mood board is clear in its ask: Christmas rom-coms for the win!
So, before the scrolling shenanigans begin for that perfect Sunday watchlist, we thought, why not bring to you whatever your festive hearts want? After all, December doesn’t come every day.
Just in case you’re blank on weekend recommendations as well, here are the five best movies to watch on Netflix this Sunday. While you can mostly expect holiday rom-coms to take over since that’s what the season demands, make sure you stay tuned till the last for a festive edition exception.
The five perfect movies to stream on a Sunday
My Secret Santa (Michael Rohl, 2025)
Life is too short to waste Sundays on a mediocre watchlist. So, for those craving movies to watch under the homemade mistletoe with your better half, start at My Secret Santa, the current global Netflix favourite. This Michael Rohl-directed movie takes the concept of Christmas chaos to a level above with the story of a desperate single mother, Taylor, who would go as far as to disguise herself as an old man to land a job as the local ski resort’s Santa to fund her daughter’s snowboarding camp.
With a little help from her friends, she lands the seasonal gig. But soon, Taylor stumbles across a charismatic man, who also happens to be the manager of the ski resort. While she initially turns him down, the sparks are visible even in the blinding daylight. However, the question is: will Taylor’s lies stand in the way of that realisation?
Jingle Bell Heist (Michael Fimognari, 2025)
As we said, the next best thing to festive feasts is Christmas chaos. Hence, if My Secret Santa leaves you craving for more, make your next pitstop Jingle Bell Heist, Michael Fimognari’s latest holiday offering. Starring the electrifying Olivia Holt and Connor Swindles, the Christmas rom-com tells the story of Sophia Martin, a woman juggling two jobs while taking care of her mother after her cancer diagnosis.
But when she learns that the insurance won’t cover the life-saving surgery her mother’s about to undergo, Sophia takes an extreme decision: to rob her dreadful boss. While she doesn’t think twice before doing the deed, she ends up getting caught by Nick O’Connor, an ex-security consultant who’s now a phone technician. Lucky for her, Nick isn’t keen on seeing Sophia behind bars; all he wants is a share of the fund to take care of her daughter following his recent divorce.
Champagne Problems (Mark Steven Johnson, 2025)
When Netflix went all out with rom-coms this holiday season, who are we to resist the trend? So, on your next Sunday to-do list, we hope you take a trip to France with Minka Kelly and Tom Wozniczka because that’s where the Champagne Problems are brewing. The Netflix romantic comedy revolves around budding executive Sydney Price, who finds herself in Paris for an upcoming career milestone.
Sydney is about to acquire one of France’s legacy champagne houses, but before getting to business, she decides to take herself out on her first night in Paris. She even comes across a charming stranger, with whom she ends up spending the entire night. While the sparks between them could light up a city, by morning, all she can think about is the deal she’s about to sign. But even though she’s fully business-minded, it looks like sparks have a way of finding Sydney as the stranger turns out to be the son of the founder of the champagne company.
The Noel Diary (Charles Shyer, 2022)
Once you get cosy with holiday rom-coms, there’s no going back. And this Sunday, we won’t even let you because the next pick on the watchlist is The Noel Diary. The 2022 movie revolves around best-selling author, Jake Turner, who comes home just in time for Christmas to settle his estranged mother’s estate, who recently passed away.
When there, he discovers the house occupied by hoarders’ belongings and a diary. He later acquaints himself with a woman, Rachel, who’s there to find out about her birth mother, who happened to be Jake’s nanny. As they embark on a journey together to decipher the diary, they uncover secrets entwined with both their pasts. But unknowingly, the journey of self-discovery also leads them on a path of unexpected romance as they break out of their shells, learning to heal.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (Rian Johnson, 2025)
Lastly, for the Sunday exception, we have Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery to end the weekend movie marathon. Daniel Craig reprises his iconic role as Benoit Blanc in this movie, which serves as the third entry in the Knives Out film series, to solve a “perfectly impossible crime,” a case beyond belief.
In Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Blanc finds himself at a small parish in upstate New York where an unimaginable crime has taken place. While he plans to leave no stone unturned to uncover the truth, make sure you don’t either, as the whodunit is among one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2025.
