The five best series to binge on Netflix this weekend

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (Max Landis, 2016-2017)

In case you’re a sucker for black comedies, you’ve crash-landed just at the right spot, as Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is a mix of all things fun and beyond. The comic sci-fi series is based on Douglas Adams’s novel series and follows an unconventional “holistic detective”, Dirk Gently. Tasked with several obscure and dubious cases which echo an interrelation between all things, he first shakes hands with Todd Brotzman and Farah Black to crack them.

Dirk’s past is also connected to a clandestine CIA project examining subjects with strange, eccentric abilities. So, while he’s on his own cases, he must evade the clasp of the agents of the program who are still tailing him and also ensure he’s not killed by one of the subjects who’s convinced that her only mission is to kill Dirk.

Inspector Koo (Lee Jung-heum, 2021)

Like the first pick, Inspector Koo also blends action, comedy, and thrills to bring you a package of entertaining fireworks. The K-drama follows an ex-cop who has left the world of crime and guns to work as an insurance investigator. Although she didn’t exactly plan to return to the occupation when she did leave it, the obsession with a serial killer infamous for staging elaborate crimes often disguised as accidents gets to her head.

Unsuspectingly, it draws Koo back into the crime, and long before you know it, she’s out hunting for this enigmatic criminal, who’s also just a college student. While Inspector Koo is a psychological thriller, the show’s also a perfect showcase of black comedy tropes. So, if you’d like to continue the laughter alongside the thrills, this Netflix series won’t disappoint.

Teenage Bounty Hunters (Kathleen Jordan, 2020)

Netflix teenagers are anything but ordinary. Dig a little and you’ll find nearly all kinds of ragtag entities. But Teenage Bounty Hunters takes the extraordinary to another level when two evangelical high school students take the high road to ensure they have enough money to repair their father’s pickup truck, having mistakenly damaged it.

No, they don’t sell lemonades or do classmates’ homework for extra money. Instead, they start bounty hunting for a seasoned bounty hunter, all the while ensuring their parents never get a hunch.

I Am Not Okay with This (Jonathan Entwhistle, 2020)

The teenage years are undoubtedly the most cherished time that adults look back on, but in the wake of nostalgia, many forget just how challenging the entire ordeal is. Every teenager has their own struggles with emotions and hormones at their peaks, and add superpowers to that, you have the I Am Not Okay with This protagonist.

The coming-of-age black comedy series on Netflix revolves around a teen girl, Sydney Novak, who discovers her psychokinetic abilities, which are influenced by strong emotions. Just as she puts in her all to harness those powers, she’s thrown into a turbulent state of life-changing situations, leaving her hands full and herself exhausted.

Murder Mindfully (Boris Kunz, Max Zähle, and Martina Plura, 2024)

To wrap up the marathon, we have another black comedy thriller that will surely make your weekend wait worth it. Murder Mindfully is a German series that follows a hardworking but down-on-his-luck law firm employee who has practically no shot at being promoted to a partner, thanks to the mafia boss Dragan Sergowicz.

Unable to maintain a work-life balance, he seeks Mindfulness therapy from Joschka Breitner. But doomed by the downward spiral due to his boss’s antics, he now leverages his coping mechanisms to end his problems in a mindful way that might just be illegal on severe notes.
