The five best series to binge on Netflix this weekend

Sicily Express (Ficarra e Picone, 2025)

With Christmas comes a whole lot of sweet tooth cravings. On Netflix, you can fulfil that appetite with a fresh new laugh-out-loud limited series, Sicily Express. Produced by Tramp Limited, the miniseries tells the story of two Italian nurses, Salvo and Valentino, who work at a Milan clinic, travelling between Sicily and Milan on low-cost flights.

While their horrible medical director persistently stands in the way of their attempts to return home, when Christmas comes around, all they hope for is a Santa-suited miracle to turn it all around. As it turns out, it’s not just Salvo and Valentino, but also the latter’s daughter who wishes the same. And lo behold, the miracle does take place, and they run into a magical dumpster that teleports them from Piazza del Duomo in Milan to their hometown in Sicily.

Murderville (Krister Johnson, 2022)

The warmth that a cosy murder mystery can bring is second to none. But if you don’t believe us, take a chance with the crime comedy series on Netflix, Murderville. Starring Will Arnett as veteran detective Terry Seattle, this improvisational series actually sees the sleuth teaming up with different celebrity guest stars in each episode to solve a murder.

Every episode is constructed in a format of standard police procedural drama. However, Murderville takes the liberty of subverting the genre with comedy elements unlike anything you have seen before. So, in case you want a thrill but also a breezy breather, you know what your weekend pitstop now looks like.

The Newsreader (Michael Lucas, 2021-2025)

If your post-Christmas weekend is all about Netflix and chill, we hope you don’t mind a full-fledged series marathon with The Newsreader. Although this is not a short-format release to get over within a blink, once you’re in, there’s absolutely no going back; that’s for sure. Set in the 1980s, the Australian drama series follows an unexpected alliance between an ambitious young journalist, Dale Jennings, and a difficult, star female newsreader, Helen Norville.

Both are riddled with skeletons in their closets, and yet, they navigate a tumultuous era where major historical events such as the Challenger disaster and the AIDS crisis are profound. What begins as a complex professional relationship eventually transitions into a romantic bond, which ultimately becomes the driving force of the three-part series.

Ripple (Michele Giannusa, 2025)

Set against the buzzing New York City, Ripple is a recently released eight-episode emotional drama which follows four strangers – Walter, Kris, Nate, and Aria – whose fates unexpectedly collide numerous times, despite never having met one another. While they come from different walks of life and have very distinct struggles of their own, their actions and decisions spark ripple effects that mysteriously entwine them.

Ripple comes with a message of hope, which might come in handy when the post-Christmas blues kick in. It explores how seemingly insignificant decisions can actually bring people together in the most unexpected ways.

Stranger Things (Duffer Brothers, 2016-Present)

Lastly, we come to the show we’ve all been waiting for: Stranger Things season five, volume two. Although its arrival on Christmas Day must have already kept your party plans at bay, in case you couldn’t cancel them last minute, the weekend is to the rescue. The three-episode volume runs for about three and a half hours, so there’s absolutely no time to waste.

The second volume of Stranger Things five picks up right after the shocking events of volume one, which ended with Will the Warrior taking centre stage. While the trailer was already a warning and a sign that we know little about the Upside Down, the real show is about to begin.
