Five best mystery series to stream right now on Netflix
You (Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble, 2019-2025)
Based on Caroline Kepnes’ book series, You is one of the most popular psychological thrillers, starring Penn Badgley. The narration centres on Joe Goldberg, whose life is made of stark contrasts: daytime sales and nighttime slaughters. He stocks the shelves when the sun’s up, but once it’s down, he collects souls. But the killer has a type. His only obsessions are the women with whom he feels a certain way.
As the series unfolds, it becomes clearer that Joe’s obsession with whoever he feels for is life-threatening. But as fate has it, he comes across a woman, Love Quinn, who has her fair share of secrets. Although they fall in love and get married, Joe’s cycle of obsession doesn’t come to a halt. However, something echoes that he is not the only death dealer in You. To find out, you must watch You.
Bodies (Marco Kreuzpaintner, 2023)
Created by Paul Tomalin for Netflix, Bodies is a sci-fi mystery thriller based on Si Spencer’s DC Vertigo graphic novel. The miniseries has just one season. But those eight episodes take you into a time warp so incredible, it’s hard not to feel dizzy. Bodies follows four London detectives through four different timelines, but all of them are caught in the same investigation. Wonder how?
Detective Sergeant Shahara Hasan finds an unclothed corpse on Longharvest Lane, where two detectives before her had chanced upon the same dead body. Detective Alfred Hillinghead in 1890, and Detective Charles Whiteman in 1941. And Detective Iris Maplewood? In the future, 2053. Although each detective tries to solve the cold case from their own timelines, they soon figure out the links that could end London. With time running out, the only question remains: what about these bodies?
Wednesday (Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, 2022-Present)
A Netflix mystery marathon without the deadpan charm of Wednesday Addams is like pasta without cheese. It just doesn’t feel right. Based on the Addams Family character, Wednesday follows the story of the morbid character who’s admitted to Nevermore Academy, her parents’ alma mater. But there’s a reason why she has to shift schools. She is shown the door because she discarded living piranhas into the school’s pool, seeking vengeance against the water polo team for bullying her brother.
Although she’s brought into a school of outcasts, she still feels like an outsider. But she soon discovers her psychic capabilities, which come in handy to solve a murder at her new school. Wednesday, too, has just one season, with a follow-up one on the horizon. So, if you want the mystery to linger a bit longer, start streaming already.
Stranger Things (The Duffer Brothers, 2016-Present)
Stranger Things takes you back in time to Hawkins, Indiana, of the 1980s. It’s essentially an otherworldly investigative drama with supernatural chaos at its left, right, and centre. Following a scientific human experimentation inside Hawkins National Library, a portal to an alternate dimension, the Upside Down, is inadvertently cracked open. And when it does, it casts an eerie shadow all over the town.
When a child, Will Byers, goes mysteriously missing, and the search leads to the discovery of a psychokinetic girl, Eleven, the fate of Hawkins changes forever. Without Eleven, Hawkins might not survive, but without her gang, probably neither will she. As they navigate how to save Hawkins from the all-consuming malevolence, Stranger Things makes you pull your hair and catch your breath. The fifth and final season is in the pipeline, and there’s no better time to catch up.
Dark (Baran bo Odar, 2017-2020)
Dark weaves a web of mystery so complex, you’ll want to relive its twists and turns like it’s your first time, every time. The sci-fi thriller unfolds in the fictional town of Winden, Germany, where children disappear into thin air. However, as the disappearances grow, a creepy resonance links the cases to vanishings of the past. With Winden’s residents now on high alert and determined to find the boys, what they stumble upon is a cave.
But make no mistake! It’s no ordinary cave. It holds generational secrets, conspiracy, allowing the characters to jump through time. And when that happens, keep a pen and notebook ready, because you’ll inevitably get lost in time. Never forget, “The end is the beginning, and the beginning is the end.”
