The five best movies to watch on Netflix on a Sunday
Viewers usually save every mundane errand for Sundays as if it’s the only day of the week with more than 24 hours to check off everything in their to-do lists. But by the time the day actually arrives, it’s difficult to even get out of bed, let alone curate a Netflix watchlist for entertainment.
That’s right where Best of Netflix caves in – armed with a weekend watchlist entirely for those who have traded entertainment for adulting.
The thing about showing back to our recreational outlets is that the more we do it, the more it becomes normalised.
So, in order to de-influence the trend of sleeping on weekends, here are the five best movies to watch on Netflix this Sunday to keep you company.
The five best movies to stream on Netflix on a Sunday
Thrash (Tommy Wirkola, 2026)
To kick-start the Sunday watchlist, we begin with what’s new on Netflix. While there’s plenty of fresh material floating above sea level, subscribers are understandably caught up in a survival thriller, Thrash on Netflix. Directed by Tommy Wirkola, the Netflix Original movie is about a Category 5 hurricane that floods a small South Carolina coastal town, bringing ravenous sharks right into the streets and homes.
Thrash tells the story of those trapped residents, primarily focusing on a pregnant woman and an agoraphobic teen, struggling to survive rising waters while keeping themselves away from the hungry sharks. Although a nuanced character-driven drama, the shark thriller explores the idea of survival not only against a natural disaster, but also against a shiver of predators, as humanity finds itself stranded in an aquatic nightmare.
The Weekend Away (Kim Farrant, 2022)
Netflix’s catalogue of thrillers is not exactly short of variations. But once you’re done battling the aquatic thrills and those of nature, pivot to The Weekend Away, based on Sarah Alderson’s 2020 novel. The Netflix thriller stars Leighton Meester as Beth, who travels all the way to Croatia for a weekend trip with her best friend Kate. As a new mother, Beth sees this opportunity as the perfect break.
But after a night of heavy drinking and clubbing, when she wakes up with no memory of the night before, only to find Kate missing, The Weekend Away turns into the beginning of a nightmare. With little help from local police, Beth finds herself at a loss for direction in a country where she barely knows anyone. So, she joins forces with a Syrian taxi driver, Zain, to investigate and finally uncover what exactly happened that night.
Let Him Go (Thomas Bezucha, 2020)
Based on Larry Watson’s 2013 novel, Let Him Go is a neo-Western thriller starring the Yellowstone actor, Kevin Costner. The 2020 movie follows retired Montana sheriff George Blackledge and his wife, Margaret, whose daughter-in-law Lorna remarries an abusive man, Donnie Weboy, after their son’s death. While Margaret always lives fearing the safety of their grandson, her nightmares actually come true when the Weboys disappear with the child.
Determined to track their grandkid, George and Margaret leave their ranch to rescue the child from the dangerous family in the Dakotas, where they encounter the controlling Weboy clan led by matriarch Blanche. So, if you’re a sucker for slow-burning thrillers where every twist leads to a darker turn, don’t forget to watch Let Him Go this Sunday.
The Break Upperers (Madeleine Sami, 2018)
While there’s no better genre than thrillers to kick off a Sunday marathon, we also equally believe in palate cleansers to reset that mood board before Monday begins. So, when you’re done tripping down the gritty lanes, soften the mood up with The Break Upperers. The rom-com follows two best friends, Mel and Jen, who are absolutely cynical about love.
Together, they run a successful agency, breaking people up for cash and pure satisfaction. But when Mel develops a conscience after falling for one of their targets, her codependent relationship and platonic friendship with Jen are put to the test. Although they became friends 15 years ago after discovering they were both dating the same guy, The Break Upperers explores that friendship when it hits a massive crisis.
Anaconda (Tom Gormican, 2025)
Lastly, the action-adventure comedy that has been trending worldwide this week, Anaconda, starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, needs to be on your Sunday watchlist. If you haven’t added it to the queue already, this is your sign. The meta-reboot of the 1997 movie serves as the seventh instalment in the franchise, where a group of childhood friends try to remake the original film, only to be caught off guard by a real anaconda.
The horror-comedy begins with Doug and Griff financing their own indie-style remake after failing to secure major funding. But the movie set actually transforms into chaos when a dangerous anaconda appears, turning the entire crew into its dinner. While Anaconda has been making waves on Netflix for two weeks straight now, if you’ve been sleeping on it, we hope you wake up this Sunday.
