The films and series leaving Netflix this month: September 2024
What do a classic sci-fi franchise, a terrible Mel Gibson thriller, and one of the most controversial movies in Netflix history all have in common? Almost nothing, except the fact they won’t be part of the streaming service’s content library on the first day of October.
Every month, the platform freshens up its offerings by adding and removing a huge number of titles, and September 2024 is no different. For anyone who’s got those movies or TV shows lurking on the watchlist, time is fast running out to get them devoured before they vanish into the ether forever, or at least for a while.
The first two entries in Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop series, all three instalments in the timeless time-travelling saga Back to the Future, the whole Fifty Shades shebang, and the uncompleted dystopian literary adaptation Divergent are all gearing up to bid a fond farewell to Netflix by September 30th.
Embracing his VOD era, Gibson’s offensively uninteresting Force of Nature is also on the way out, as is his ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’-nominated biographical war epic Hacksaw Ridge. A24’s Bodies Bodies Bodies, Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West, Samuel L Jackson and Colin Farrell’s SWAT, and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Barbarian will be joining them, so plenty of big names are heading swiftly for the exit.
Those who were so appalled they cancelled their subscriptions in protest and developed such a distaste for writer and director Maïmouna Doucouré’s coming-of-age drama Cuties that Netflix ended up being indicted in the state of Texas and threatened with congressional hearings will at least be thrilled to know it won’t be around for much longer, even if the controversy has largely been forgotten.
One issue that’s plagued almost every single one of Netflix’s subscribers is adding something to the watch-list in the belief that it’s going to be viewed eventually, only to discover that when that moment finally rolls around, it’s nowhere to be seen.
Thankfully, the interface did at least seek to remedy that situation by offering reminders, but the clock is nonetheless ticking on dozens of film and television titles.
