The feel-good Katherine Heigl rom-com storming Netflix

The 1990s and noughties were a glorious era for romantic comedies. Love stories were served up with a side of quirky charm and a sprinkle of feel-good magic. Well, if you’re feeling an itch for those “simpler times”, look no further than Netflix’s latest sensation starring Katherine Heigl.

Directed by Anne Fletcher, 27 Dresses is a delightful romp through the trials and tribulations of one perpetually single woman named Jane Nichols, who finds herself always playing the role of bridesmaid but never the bride. Written by Aline Brosh McKenna, this predictable but hearty tale of love and finding gumption along the way weaves together silly antics with a healthy dose of romantic tension between Heigl’s Jane and James Marsden’s jaded reporter, Kevin Doyle.

But what makes 27 Dresses special is its enduring appeal. Who wouldn’t see shades of themselves in Jane as she deals with perpetually being the emotional caretaker of all around her?

There is a little more to Jane beyond the simple ‘girl pines for the wrong guy, gets taken advantage of by every selfish person around her, and meets just the right one before the movie ends’ storyline.

Despite being released over a decade ago, the film has soared to a coveted spot on Netflix’s top ten list of movies in the US this week. And if the Firefly Lane star has her way, we may even see a sequel in the works. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Heigl expressed her desire to revisit the beloved characters, “I want to do a sequel.” She continued, “Unfortunately, we can’t quite get the rights…I think it would be awesome to see what are their lives like ten years later? Do they end up together? I personally think they did.”

She even has ideas about what the film could chronicle this time around. “I think [Tess and George] have, like, three kids, and she’s made Jane the godmother every time, so Jane has to plan the christenings and the baby showers and the gender-reveal parties, but then all the other bridesmaids [also] make her the godmother,” she went on. “But [Jane and Kevin] can’t get pregnant.”
