‘The Diplomat’ returns with season three this October
The streaming season is at its peak on Netflix this month. Next in the lineup of the highly anticipated is the political thriller, The Diplomat. Keri Russell is all set to return as Kate Wyler, the freshly appointed US ambassador to the UK, for a third season in October. But this season, she might just be up for a role swap.
According to Tudum, the third season of The Diplomat will be released on Netflix on October 16th. And this time, the Netflix series “flips the chessboard.” As Deborah Cahn puts it, Kate’s nightmare is the downside of fulfilment. In the last instalment, she accused Vice President Grace Penn of scheming a terrorist plot.
Instead of confiding in the US Secretary of State Miguel Ganon, Kate’s husband, Hal, ended up turning to the President. And clearly, the information didn’t sit well. With the president now dead, Grace now has the ultimate autonomy. While that’s certainly not a setback to Hal’s campaign for Kate to secure the vice presidency, she now has to take on a role she didn’t want with an extent of independence she didn’t expect.
However, she now has to navigate the already complex political landscape while maintaining the friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison and the unsettling link with First Gentleman Todd Penn.
Bradley Whitford will portray President Grace Penn’s husband, Todd Penn, in The Diplomat’s third season. Speaking of the West Wing alum to Tudum, Cahn said, “Brad was the fantasy version of Todd – for all of us. We still can’t believe it came true.” The streaming giant has already released first-look pictures of Whitford as Todd Penn alongside a teaser trailer teasing what’s to come.
Netflix has additionally dropped a second teaser trailer, in which Kate says to Hal, “A terribly flawed woman is now the president, and only we know just how flawed.” While Kate and Hal are clearly on the same boat as the audience, the stakes are incredibly high in season three.
Production has already wrapped in London and New York. But the storm has yet to come. So, enjoy the calm before the storm before the political realm erupts like an active volcano in The Diplomat season three.
