‘The Asset’: the Netflix thriller that rose to fame overnight

Netflix has left the viewers captivated once again with yet another gritty thriller that deserves all the attention it’s getting, The Asset.

Despite hitting Netflix shelves on Monday, October 27th, it has risen through the ranks, trending on the homepage as the number three title.

The new Danish series starring Clara Dessau, Maria Cordsen, Nicolas Bro, and Afshin Firouzi takes place in Denmark and follows a cadet who’s now on a mission to make the most of her last chance at joining the force, no matter what it takes. Coming from the creators Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm, best known for Carmen Curlers and Kasper Barfoed, well known for The Chestnut Man and The Nurse, The Asset is truly cementing its status as an asset for Netflix.

The Asset primarily revolves around a seemingly normal cadet, Tea Lind, portrayed by Dessau, training at the police intelligence agency – Politiets Efterretningstjeneste, or PET. While she likes to keep to herself and goes the extra mile in training, there’s a reason behind her hard-working demeanour. She has set her sights on a very personal mission, which is to uproot and stand against the drug empires that she blames for the substance abuse that traumatised her childhood.

But her life soon begins to fall apart along with her dreams when she’s informally put out of the cadet program without any rational explanation. Just when she assumes it’s over for her dreams, she’s sought by an enigmatic director of the undercover division at PET, Folke, played by Bro. However, the mission he has for Tea is anything but a walk in the park.

Although dangerous, accomplishing the mission could turn her life around, as it comes with the promise of a job with PET if she succeeds. For those wondering what the mission is, well, it’s quite simple on paper. She has to go undercover as Sara Linneman, a luxury jeweller, in order to gain the trust of Ashley, who happens to be the girlfriend of Denmark’s most formidable cocaine dealer. Needless to say, the stakes are high and the danger? Even higher.

It’s important to note that she lacks undercover training. However, the opportunity makes her confident that she would be able to elicit crucial information with her ability to discern people’s “hidden motivations.” When she finally meets Ashley, she catches Folke and her team off guard by reeling her in at the first chance. And since Ashley cannot do away with the prospect of boasting her wealthy status to a jeweller, she books an appointment at the store.

While Tea senses the inevitability of success when she manages to gain her trust easily, little does she know it’s the start of something super deadly and complex. The thing is that Ashley’s boyfriend’s drug empire is already spiralling out of control, courtesy of his younger brother. And the decline doesn’t look good for anyone on the radar. The six-episode series is currently streaming on Netflix and rising through the streaming ranks. So, before the spoilers ruin it for you, don’t forget to tune in.
