The animated movie taking the Netflix charts by storm: ‘KPop Demon Hunters’
Netflix has been a busy bee lately, fanning the flames of what’s to come. Yet one title that arrived and sent viewers into a frenzy is its latest animated entry, KPop Demon Hunters. No matter how much content Netflix rolls out every day, it never stops thinking out of the box. And this time, with KPop Demon Hunters’ unique storyline, stunning animation, and powerful voice actors, the streaming mogul has brought home a win that’s going to stay for a long time.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, KPop Demon Hunters is an animated musical fantasy film, currently rising on Netflix US’s global top ten movies chart. It is ranked at number six, right behind The Last Witch Hunter and Trainwreck: Mayor of Mayhem. Despite its relatively recent release on June 20th, 2025, KPop Demon Hunters is a top ten movie on Netflix across 80 countries at the moment.
The track record of viewership amassed in six days suggests the Netflix film has cracked the algorithm streaming momentum and fan favouritism. Directorial efforts were split between Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. For those unaware, KPop Demon Hunters follows a troupe of fictional K-pop girls, HUNTR/X, comprising Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. However, this is far from a typical K-pop girl group fans have seen before.
Having been raised in a world where demons have preyed on humans for generations, HUNTER/X’s girls live a double life as an army of demon hunters. Following their world tour, a dramatic turn of events leads to Rumi losing her voice because she’s part demon. Driven by the desire to eradicate demons’ existence once and for all, they face off against a boy band, the Saja Boys, who are secretly demons themselves.
KPop Demon Hunters expertly blends Korean heritage by borrowing elements of mythology, demonology, and K-pop. The concept dawned on Kang from her desire to create a story rooted in her Korean culture. However, it’s not just the storyline and cultural context that resulted in the Netflix film’s streaming dominance. South Korean titles on Netflix have churned out a cult following, and one of the most successful shows, Squid Game, will complete its full circle on June 27th.
So, it goes without saying that South Korean projects have a complete hold over the Netflix audience at the moment. But besides its geographical roots, KPop Demon Hunters has an excellent stylistic structure. Kang has drawn elements from the contemporary concert shows. Moreover, Korean dramas, music videos, and anime have influenced her thought process, in turn, allowing fans an immersive viewing experience.
Music is at the heart of KPop Demon Hunters, but not just as a narrative trope. The soundtrack is itself a character which breathes life into the animated gem. Although the film is animated, the voice actors have done a stellar job, convincing fans to give it a shot. Additionally, review aggregator sites like Rotten Tomatoes have given KPop Demon Hunters a 96% approval rating, while Metacritic scored it a 77/100. And with the buzz growing all the louder by the minute, its quick rise on the Netflix chart no longer seems like a surprise.
