The 2014 Eric Dane action thriller coming to Netflix this June: ‘The Last Ship’

Netflix is mining gold when it comes to content, irrespective of original or borrowed. While the original slate of productions in June is confirmed to blow your mind, what you must also keep an eye out for is the roster of the streamer’s licensed titles, which is soon going to welcome the Eric Dane action thriller, The Last Ship.

Although Netflix users are already on the edge of their seats, courtesy of the huge departure arc next month, one thing is for sure: the streaming giant won’t leave anyone empty-handed, and The Last Ship is proof.

Scheduled to hit Netflix shelves on June 22nd, if you’re already on the lookout for your next high-profile binge, you’ll want to mark your calendars now. For the first time ever, Netflix is bringing all five seasons, spanning 56 episodes, of the hit sci-fi action thriller, starring Eric Dane, to its library.

While many fans know the late actor for his smooth-talking stint as Dr Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, The Last Ship features what is widely considered his finest work as a leading man. The addition also comes at a poignant time for fans, following Dane’s tragic demise earlier this year after a brave battle with ALS.

Netflix even rolled out a posthumous interview in its docuseries Famous Last Words. So, if you’ve watched Dane pour his heart out and want to dive deeper into his showbiz legacy, The Last Ship captures his incredible screen presence and unmatched capability as a commanding hero. Similarly, if you’re of the opinion that network television cannot deliver high-stakes action, the series will prove you wrong. But then again, you have to give it a chance.

Loosely inspired by William Brinkley’s 1988 post-apocalyptic fiction novel, the action drama opens with a fictional global virus pandemic that wipes out 80% of Earth’s population. The plot follows the 218-person crew of the USS Nathan James, a US Navy guided-missile destroyer, completely isolated on a classified mission in the Arctic, when the virus broke out, thus remaining unaffected.

Realising they are among the handful of survivors on Earth, the crew, led by Captain Tom Chandler, must shield the paleo-microbiologist who holds the key to a vaccine.

Unlike shows that give you one season and 14 seasons of wait, The Last Ship is completely finished, which leaves no room for misplaced frustration over extended waiting time. So, whether you love post-apocalyptic survival stories, political thrillers, or just pure military adrenaline, the show is shaping up to be the ultimate summer watch that is perfectly primed for a massive revival on Netflix.
