Welcome back to our weekly roundup of what the world’s watching on Netflix. Last week we saw a seismic shift in viewing sentiment. In contrast, things have remained fairly static this week, though there are some new arrivals. Even a couple of old favourites have made their return. Let’s take a closer look.
At number ten, we’ve got the sixth season of Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons, in which investigative journalists step into some of the most volatile prisons on earth. Holding the number nine spot, meanwhile, is the first season of Fate: The Winx Saga, which has accumulated over 9 million hours of viewing time in the two weeks its been on-site.
The popularity of this first Fate season is coupled with that of the second, which is currently holding the number three spot, just below the fifth season of Dynasty, which focuses on the lives of two affluent families in Atlanta “caught in an outrageous feud for power, prestige and love.”
Having dropped off the top ten chart last week, the fourth season of Stranger Things is back, having garnered over ten million hours of viewing time in the 18 weeks it’s been available. That’s nothing compared to the eye-watering numbers accumulated by series one and two of The Crown or, for that matter, the fifth season of Cobra Kai, which has earned 20,820,000 hours in four weeks.
Sitting just below Cobra Kai is the first season of Heartbreak High, an attempt by creator Hannah Carroll Chapman to mimic the success of Sex Education. The show focuses on the life and times of Hartley High. After a scandalous mural exposes the hookups of students, its author, Amerie, is forced to reckon with life as an outcast.
There’s no ignoring the enormous success of Ryan Murphy’s true crime series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which has become Netflix’s ninth most popular English-language TV show of all time, having raked in a jaw-dropping 299,840,000 hours of viewing time. The show has surely benefitted from the ongoing controversy surrounding the use of an LGBTQ+ tag to categorise the show, not to mention criticisms from relatives of Dahmer’s victims.
