The 10 most popular movies on Netflix US this week: September 2025

Netflix bombarded the US library with many movies at the start of September. By the looks of the ten most popular movies chart in the country this week, it looks like Netflix can officially read minds.

The scenic change is not just global. As one of the biggest markets of the streaming giant, the shift is far more evident in America.

KPop Demon Hunters has officially lost the throne to Unknown Number: High School Catfish, the documentary film is currently leading the US chart, reducing the previous chart-topper to second position. While it must have been a little unexpected after several weeks of staying on the summit, the silver rank means the momentum is still not over.

Speaking of momentum, The Thursday Murder Club is also going strong, ranking third both in the domestic and international charts. The debates and discussions persist over whether the film is worth watching, thanks to the discrepancies between the Netflix adaptation and the original source. However, the viewership suggests otherwise.

On the flip side, Netflix just hit a home run, bringing the Shrek franchise to the platform. Believe it or not, the movie collection has everyone completely hooked Stateside, with Shrek, Shrek the Third, and Shrek 2 positioned fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, on this week’s top ten most popular movies chart in the US.

Meanwhile, Taylor Sheridan’s crime thriller, Wind River, which he previously described as his most “personal” project yet in his trilogy of modern American west, enjoys a far comfortable position at number seven compared to its global ranking. But a surprise player has grabbed the eye in the 2019 psychological horror film, Escape Room.

While Netflix has a thing for pulling rabbits out of its hats, the last two titles are not exactly unexpected. The streamer brought a hefty number of movies from years past to keep the September marathon going. And US fans are clearly caught in the spell with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Shrek Forever After rounding out this week’s top ten most popular movies chart on Netflix.
