The 10 most popular movies on Netflix US this week: May 2026
The most popular movies on Netflix have clearly undergone a major shuffle in the closing week of May. But despite the intensity of the influx, the wave of trends couldn’t move this title an inch from the top spot.
In the week ending May 31st, Gareth Johnson’s The Crash may have been toppled from the apex of the most popular movies chart worldwide. But in the US? The true-crime movie is leading the wolf-pack of cinematic gems right at the top for yet another week, refusing to let go of its treasured position.
Succeeding the movie inspired by a shocking true crime is the 2025 action thriller Cleaner, starring Samuel L Jackson at number two. While the punch-fest also cracked the most popular movies chart internationally, clearly, it enjoys a far better position Stateside, and for good reason.
Ranked third on the most popular movies chart in the US is the animated sports comedy, GOAT, starring Caleb McLaughlin. Although it is the first animated movie on the US chart, it is far from the only one trending from the genre. But before we get ahead of ourselves, on fourth, we have the global chart-topper of the week, Ladies First.
While the Rosamund Pike and Sacha Baron Cohen-led body-swap comedy outdid The Crash internationally, the same fan fervour didn’t duplicate in the US, underscoring a regional difference in cinematic momentum. But are Americans complaining? Doesn’t seem so.
Up next on the most popular movies chart in the US, we have two back-to-back animated gems storming like there’s no tomorrow. Firstly, we have Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was recently added back to the US platform, sparking an instant boost in viewership numbers. Following it closely is Nathan Greno’s record-breaking animated fantasy adventure, Swapped, still refusing to touchdown.
Meanwhile, many Lifetime movies have come and gone in the past few weeks. However, Stolen Baby: The Murder of Heidi Broussard is definitely here to stay as it continues strutting the most popular movies chart in the US for a third straight week.
Next in the queue is Olivia Newman’s adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures, which is keeping the global and regional momentum on par. And speaking of surprise players, Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, which was also added pretty recently, is currently ranked ninth on the most popular movies chart.
Rounding out the most popular movies chart this week is the survival thriller fans cannot seem to get enough of: Apex, and with that, it’s officially a wrap for May.
