The 10 most popular movies on Netflix US this week: May 2026

The floodgates of the reshuffled most popular movies chart on Netflix US are officially opened for this week. But instead of Goat, something else is busy challenging who’s the greatest of all time.

While the most popular movies chart in the US and across the globe were not on par last week, in the week dated May 17th to May 24th, they’ve changed allegiances, now belonging to the same side of the court.

Gareth Johnson’s The Crash has leapt to the top of the most popular movies chart globally this week after amassing 27.6million views worldwide. The true-crime movie is currently ranked number one in 23 countries, including the United States, Canada, Panama, Switzerland, Belgium, and Austria, among others.

Ranked second on the most popular movies chart this week is the animated sports-comedy Goat, starring Caleb McLaughlin. Although the flick was a chart-topper last week, The Crash remains undisputed this time around, which again, is also true for the Lifetime movie, Stolen Baby: The Murder of Heidi Broussard, that has been persistently climbing upwards since its Netflix debut.

By now, the frenzy surrounding the network’s ripped-from-the-headlines series is at an all-time high, which has boosted the movie’s presence in the international charts. Consequently, its rise on the most popular movies chart Stateside doesn’t come as a surprise, considering the ongoing hype.

Having said that, next we have Nathan Greno’s record-breaking animated fantasy adventure, Swapped. While the movie has been busy flapping its wings right from the outset, despite losing the top spot globally, it is still making waves everywhere it touches down. Meanwhile, similar to the most popular movies chart worldwide, rounding out the top five fan-favourites is Olivia Newman’s Remarkably Bright Creatures adaptation.

On number six, Netflix US has the body-swap comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike, Ladies First. Although the Netflix comedy enjoys a better spot on the most popular movies chart worldwide, since this is just the premiere week, it’s safe to assume that the fever is only getting started.

But the frenzy that persists even downstairs is the Lifetime craze, thanks to Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini rising through the ranks to seventh on the most popular movies chart in the US. The true-crime buzz lives on, and so do the sci-fi waves, courtesy of the 2022 sci-fi horror movie, NOPE, currently ranked eighth on the US charts.

Finally, wrapping up the trends for the week are two back-to-back action thrillers, Cleaner, followed by Apex. And just like that, we come to a close with the weekly trends this time.
