The 10 most popular movies on Netflix US this week: September 2026
The best thing about Netflix Original films is that they always find their way to the top of the streamer’s most popular movies chart, sooner or later.
So, if you were one of those who were upset that James Ashcroft’s star-studded serial killer thriller adaptation lost the top spot the first time around, the missed opportunity has officially been redeemed.
During the week of August 31st to September 6th, The Whisper Man, based on Alex North’s bestselling novel, didn’t just make it to the top of the international most popular movies chart with 33.4million views; it took the throne in 68 countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, the Bahamas, Chile, Canada, Costa Rica, and most importantly, the United States.
While the mystery thriller retained the momentum it lost in its debut week, the Danish amnesia thriller The Secret Woman also left a mark bigger than the week prior, ranking second on the most popular movies chart in the US.
Similarly, the animated comedy based on the popular video game of the same name, The Angry Birds Movie 2, may have made the audience scroll a bit in the global rankings. But Stateside? It is one of the top three candidates on the most popular movies chart and the only non-original in the trio.
Although this simply underscores the craze about Hollywood animations, next in line is Brian Knappenberger’s gripping new entry in the Turning Point franchise, Generation 9/11, which arrived 25 years after the terrifying 9/11 attacks in 2001. Surely, it enjoys a better ranking on the global chart, but fourth in the US is honestly not too bad.
That said, ranked fifth on the most popular movies chart in the US is the Mexican action thriller Facing El Chapo, based on the true story of the intense manhunt and recapture of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the notorious drug kingpin and former top leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Up next on the most popular movies chart, Netflix has one of the latest entries from its critically acclaimed sports docuseries, Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly, at number six, followed by an epic biographical hip-hop drama, Straight Outta Compton, at seventh. Meanwhile, at number eight, Netflix has an ‘80s classic doing the rounds: 9 to 5.
That leaves us with the final two entries of the week, Ready or Not and Shark Tale, which recently hit Netflix shelves in September. And with those, we officially come to a close for the week!
