The 10 most popular movies on Netflix US this week: August 2025
The roll call has begun on the Netflix US side of entertainment this week. And raising their hands in the first row is the relentless KPop Demon Hunters. As it turns out, the Maggie Kang-directed animation is not just leading globally, but also regionally, spending its ninth week on the top ten most popular movies chart on Netflix US.
Yet, this time around, the streaming trends are far more different compared to the international benchmarks. Succeeding the record-breaking Netflix production is Gerard Butler’s punch-fest of a spy thriller, Kandahar. Although the film didn’t qualify for the top five on the global charts this week, it has clearly cast the action spell on Americans.
Meanwhile, the Adam Sandler comedy sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, remains busy stirring a frenzy, whether in the US or around the world. Happy’s return has kept laughter rolling like a retro camera with endless films. The Netflix film officially rounds out the top three on the most popular movies chart on Netflix US this week in August.
That said, US fans have not exactly been able to look away from what’s fresh on Netflix. Vanessa Kirby’s latest crime thriller, Night Always Comes, is on a move up the ladder, currently ranked fourth within the first week of its release. And although the genre trends remain similar to the global landscape, the rom-com that’s rebuilding momentum Stateside is Marry Me.
Additionally, with the Fast and Furious lineup landing on Netflix US last week, viewers have showered love on one particular title that’s completely unexpected: Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. The spin-off is currently ranked sixth on the top ten most popular movies chart in the US.
And it is succeeded by a fantasy action film based on ancient Egyptian deities, Gods of Egypt. This is the second Gerard Butler movie to make a noise on the charts after Kandahar. Coming up next on the eighth is one of the childhood favourites, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which has been consistently on a climb since last week.
Lastly, the animation craze is taking over the US fans as Despicable Me 2 rises through the ranks and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation extends its stay.
