The 10 most popular movies on Netflix this week: October 2024
Netflix is a funny old place. Not only does the streamer regularly provide its millions of viewers with fresh hits thanks to its healthy supply of Netflix originals, but it can also provide a second wind for films that, quite frankly, many had forgotten about.
While an array of classic films from decades ago have enjoyed resurgences after being picked up by the streamer, this week, a more obscure title from the previous decade sits at the top of Netflix’s charts as the most popular movie this week. The movie in question is Tim Burton’s 2016 adaptation of Ransom Rigg’s 2011 novel, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
The film boasts an all-star cast of Eva Green, Judi Dench, Samuel L. Jackson, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris O’Dowd, Allison Janney and a young Asa Butterfield and Ella Purnell, two actors now fast on the rise thanks to Sex Education and Fallout, respectively.
Although the film did well at the box office, taking home $296.5 million against a budget of 110 million, its critical reception was middling, so there’s no surprise it came and went without much fanfare from fans. However, it has now racked up 7.1 million views on Netflix over the past week, sending straight to the top of the charts, with the hours spent watching it now at 15.1 million.
Coming in second this week is the Netflix film Jailbreak: Love on the Run. It tells the true story of respected Alabama corrections officer Vicky White, who aids the escape of a violent criminal 20 years her junior. What unfolds is a bizarre love story as they run from the law. An absolutely typical tale for the streamer to tell—bearing in mind they’ve had numerous successes on the true crime front over the years—this film has 6.5 million views, and 9.6 million hours were spent watching it.
Taking home the bronze medal this week is the animated contemporary classic, Sing. A 2016 jukebox musical comedy set in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, it undoubtedly has the most sprawling, high-profile cast on this week’s top ten, featuring the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, and many more. Placing it in the third spot were 5.6 million views, and 10 million hours worth of views.
Elsewhere on the top ten this week is Rebel Ridge, the crime thriller from Jeremy Saulnier, which has been celebrated by none other than Stephen King. Starring Aaron Pierre and Don Johnson, it follows the story of a former Marine battling a corrupt police force and has 5.5 million views. Coming in at ninth is the 2023 action comedy Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, starring Chris Pine and Hugh Grant, with 3.2 million views and perhaps owing to the success of the original, Sing 2 closes out the top ten with 3.1 million streams.
