The 10 most popular movies on Netflix this week: May 2026
After two weeks of non-stop trailblazing at the top of the most popular movies chart on Netflix, Swapped has finally made room for an unprecedented swap by letting a gripping true-crime movie take its place.
By now, viewers must have already guessed the chart-topper. But if some of them still feel like they’re in the dark, well, the buzz is all about Gareth Johnson’s The Crash. In the week ending May 24th, the Netflix movie, inspired by a shocking true crime, amassed a whopping 27.6million views, becoming the number one movie in 27 countries, including Canada, Panama, Austria, Belgium, and Switzerland, among others.
Right beneath The Crash, Swapped is flapping its wings on the most popular movies chart this week. In the week dated May 17th to May 24th, Nathan Greno’s animated fantasy adventure garnered 16.1million views worldwide, losing its top spot in the process. However, it remains the number one title in 20 countries, such as in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Costa Rica, to name a few.
Ranked third on the most popular movies chart this week is the Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike-led body-swap comedy, Ladies First. The raunchy comedy premiered last Friday and debuted on international charts this week with 11.9million views, becoming the number one movie in 13 countries, including Morocco, Spain, and Bulgaria.
Up next on the most popular movies chart, Netflix has another animated feature, Goat, starring Caleb McLaughlin. The sports comedy flick earned 10.1million views this week, placing itself right above Olivia Newman’s Remarkably Bright Creatures adaptation, which has rounded out the top five titles with 8.2million views.
On number six, Baltasar Kormákur’s survival thriller, led by Charlize Theron, Apex, is still going strong with 6.7million views. While that clarifies that it’s all about the survival of the fittest on the most popular movies chart, the next player on the list also proves the Lifetime momentum is far from gone now.
In fact, Stolen Baby: The Murder of Heidi Broussard, which is plucked from the network’s ripped-from-the-headlines series, is currently making a splash on the most popular movies chart as well as on the online forums. This week alone, the true-crime movie has earned 6.7million views, ranking seventh on the international charts.
Meanwhile, a forgotten romantic comedy, In Her Shoes, has also made its way onto the most popular movies chart this week, currently positioned eighth. But if you think that’s the only rom-com Netflix subscribers have been stuck on, you’re wrong because succeeding the 2005 movie is a genre cheerleader from 2023, No Hard Feelings.
Last but not least, and quite surprisingly, the last slot on the most popular movies chart belongs to the Oscar-winning KPop Demon Hunters. Although this feels like the last leg, especially after the movie’s exit from the US chart two weeks ago, only time will tell whether the animated mainstay retains its position next week for the 50th time.
