The most popular movies chart on Netflix this week is shining with a North Star at the summit, and just like that, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

While the Netflix audience already slipped into festive mode, thanks to the holiday rom-coms that arrived earlier this December, Rian Johnson’s latest whodunit, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, has still managed to outshine that craze, as the current number one movie in the global charts.

In the week of December 8th to December 14th, the Knives Out film amassed a whopping 20.2million views, becoming the number one movie in 39 countries. But if you think the rom-com fever is entirely gone, you’re wildly mistaken.

My Secret Santa is clutching silver, ranked second on the most popular movies chart this week, having garnered 16.2million views in its second week. The Netflix romantic comedy is also the number one movie in six countries.

Moving on, on the third, we have the George Clooney and Adam Sandler-led comedy drama, Jay Kelly, with 9million views this week. As the top ten title in 58 countries, this Noah Baumbach movie is undoubtedly one of the current fan favourites on Netflix.

As for the titles rounding out the top five on the most popular movies chart, firstly, it’s Maggie Kang’s record-breaking animated movie, KPop Demon Hunters, followed by yet another animated gem we all know well and love, The Super Mario Bros Movie. In addition to a common genre, the flicks have tied at the global charts, each earning 8million views this week.

Coming to the sixth, there’s the vigilante action thriller starring Bruce Willis, Death Wish, with 5.9million views. Succeeding the 2018 punch-fest is a laugh-out-loud comedy drama led by Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, The Hustle.

You can honestly tell a lot about global cultural trends from the trendsetters strutting on the most popular movies chart. And it looks like this week belongs to the animated catalogue, as the movies positioned eighth and ninth are The Croods: A New Age and Dr Seuss’ The Lorax.

Although the frenzy surrounding holiday rom-coms has clearly died down in comparison to the previous few weeks, the craze is far from lost, as is evident from the flick drawing the finish line to this week’s most popular movies chart globally, A Merry Little Ex-Mas. And with that, it’s officially a wrap.
