The 10 most popular movies on Netflix this week: August 2024

The latest Netflix blockbuster starring a pair of world-famous A-listers refuses to be budged from the top of the most-watched movies list, with Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry’s The Union holding firm at the summit.

That’s to be expected when any of the streaming service’s splashy original films boasting a powerhouse pairing of stars is guaranteed to enjoy at least a couple of weeks in the spotlight, especially when it sells itself on the promise of international espionage and explosive action sequences.

It isn’t the only action flick to be making waves, either, with Nigerian thriller Tòkunbò making an impressive debut in sixth position. The high-concept thriller follows the title character and smuggler who finds himself plunged into a desperate race against time to kidnap the daughter of a government official to save his family’s life.

Action, in general, appears to be the genre of choice among subscribers, with the first two instalments in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman franchise continuing to play well since being snapped up by the streamer, while Scarlett Johansson’s bonkers and intentionally implausible slab of sci-fi lunacy Lucy has debuted in eighth.

Original comedy Incoming arrived in second place despite being on the receiving end of a critical mauling, with the riotous romp updating the tried-and-trusted teen comedy formula for a new generation, which it’s achieved by way of accruing almost 10 million views in its first frame.

As often tends to be the case, there are a couple of spots staked out for animation, with the box office success of 2023’s anthropomorphised caper Migration comfortably translating onto Netflix after it swooped in to debut in fourth spot on the top ten. Sadly, despite being awful on every conceivable level, The Emoji Movie continues to hang around, too. For shame, parents everywhere.

There’s always room for murder, too, with the latest edition of Untold focusing on the killing of 13-season NFL veteran Steve ‘Air’ McNair continuing the ongoing obsession users everywhere have with troubling tales of true crime, this time with the caveat of the incident in question focusing on a well-known sportsman.

Kevin Hart’s abysmal comedy Night School slips down to ninth, but given the diminutive comic’s popularity on Netflix, it probably won’t be too long before another entry from his back catalogue gets its next lease of life.
