The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: September 2024

The bawdy teen comedy is a cinematic staple that’s endured for generations, and this week’s number one movie on Netflix carries on in that proud tradition by detailing the dangers and debauchery of high school life.

Like many films of its ilk, Incoming hasn’t exactly been showered with critical praise, but that hasn’t stopped it from finally dislodging Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry’s espionage caperThe Union, from the summit to take the top spot on the streaming service’s most-watched list. The A-list pairing will now begin their inevitable slide down the charts, just like the majority of Netflix’s star-powered originals, most people probably won’t even remember it existed a month from now.

The highest-ranked newcomer is Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance, another one of those horror flicks that claims to be inspired by true events, a statement that’s entirely subjective depending entirely on how much anyone chooses to believe in the supernatural.

It’s one of only three fresh additions to crack the top ten this week. The latest edition of Untold focuses on the sign-stealing scandal that rocked American college football. However, it couldn’t even dislodge its predecessor, with The Murder of Air McNair one spot ahead in sixth.

The third and final edition isn’t even a Netflix original but rather a two-decade-old romantic comedy with Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. Still, it’s an ample reminder that How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days has lost none of its ability to charm audiences if it’s wasted no time in becoming one of the streamer’s biggest hits.

Nigerian action movie Tòkunbò continues to reaffirm itself as the unsung sleeper hit of the late summer by holding steady in fourth during its second week, while the ever-popular animation is well-represented with Migration, The Emoji Movie, and The Super Mario Bros Movie continuing to play well among users worldwide.

It’s not the most exciting week for Netflix by any stretch when there are only two brand-new exclusives entering the top ten right away. Still, at least horror films boasting a cast full of recognisable stars and true crime are bulletproof enough to ensure subscribers are wrapping their eyeballs around at least a couple of newbies.
