Love it or hate it, Netflix remains the most user-friendly streaming platform with an algorithm designed to recommend content you love to watch. This week the top ten most popular films on Netflix include classics as well as new hits that have garnered massive watch hours—from The Mother to The Deep End of the Ocean.
This week’s global top ten list is dominated by Niki Caro’s The Mother, starring Jennifer Lopez as an undercover military operative who has to give up parental rights in order to protect her daughter Zoe. When Zoe gets kidnapped, the titular Mother has to come out of hiding to save her. Written by Misha Green, Andrea Berloff, and Peter Craig, the film also stars Joseph Fiennes, Lucy Paez, Omari Hardwick, Paul Raci, and Gael García Bernal. It has raked in 83.7million watch hours within its first week of release on Netflix.
Tom Hanks’ A Man Called Otto has slipped one spot this week with 19.88 million watch hours. Directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by David Magee, the comedy-drama about a cynical ol’ widower, Otto (played by Hanks), is based on a 2012 novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman.
It might be a better option to watch if the reviews on The Mother have put you off the action thriller. A Man Called Otto tells the story of the suicidal Otto, whose unlikely friendship with his new neighbour Marisol saves him in more ways than he cares to acknowledge at first.
The 2013 animated family adventure comedy The Croods sits at the third spot this week with 8.7 million watch hours. It is followed by The Deep End of the Ocean, the surprise Michelle Pfeiffer hit from 1999.
Justice Benson’s science horror flick Synchronic, starring Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan, has crawled its way up to the fifth spot on the global top ten list. Kung Fu Panda 3, Wrong Place, The Tournament, Pitch Perfect, and Heat make up the rest of the list this week.
