The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: July 2024

As we approach the middle of July, Netflix has cycled some of its content, announcing several movies leaving the platform and others set to take their places. Last month, the Richard Linklater movie Hit Man made it to number one on the Netflix Top Ten list and scored particularly well with the critics.

Following a flourish of popularity, Hit Man has fallen from the rankings, with the brand new Eddie Murphy movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F taking its place at number one. The movie is the fourth instalment in the franchise and arrived on July 3rd to mixed reviews.

Three decades on from the events of the previous movie, Beverly Hills Cop III, Murphy’s character, Detroit Detective Axel Foley, returns to the streets of Beverly Hills after his daughter Jane’s life is put in the balance. She joins her father and his new partner, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, to uncover a wild conspiracy. Judge Reinhold also returns to his role as Billy Rosewood, while John Ashton returns to portray Taggart.

It has now been 40 years since the first Beverly Hills Cop movie arrived. While the first three movies captured ten years of change, the fourth movie finds the Los Angeles neighbourhood in an unrecognisable state. “Detroit is a much different city than Los Angeles, and especially Beverly Hills,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer said of the new movie. “He still has the same kind of wonderment at the things you see walking down Rodeo Drive.”

Director Mark Molloy, who replaces John Landis in the director’s chair, also noted the contrast in a statement to Tudum. “As we were scouting going from Detroit to Beverly Hills, the cultural contrast that made Axel a fish out of water in the eighties still is so vivid,” he said. “They might just be the two most opposite places in America.”

Concluding his statement, Bruckheimer praised Murphy’s acting comeback. “Eddie’s such an incredible artist. He can do drama, he can do comedy – he can do anything,” he beamed. “And he’s the same Axel Foley. He’s still on the streets. He’s still doing what he does. Obviously, with age, you get wiser. But he still has the twinkle in his eye.”

Currently, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sits at the top of Netflix with a total of 41,000,000 views, equating to 80,700,000 hours viewed. In second place, is A Family Affair, Richard LaGravenese’s new romantic comedy, with 31,900,000 views.
