The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: July 2024

Any time Netflix debuts a new blockbuster action movie, star-studded ensemble piece, or hard-boiled crime thriller, it’s virtually guaranteed to top the charts. However, the romantic comedy should never be discounted, with this week’s number one movie about as light and fluffy as it gets.

Writer and director Stelana Kliris’ Find Me Falling was never going to have critics tripping over themselves to shower it with praise, but the story of an aging rockstar hitting the pause button on his career to relocate to a holiday home near a Cypriot suicide hotspot has been playing like gangbusters.

Starring Harry Connick Jr, the film has notched 22.5million viewing hours to premiere as the biggest movie on the biggest streaming service, which isn’t a bad way to announce itself. The theme of variety being the spice of life continues throughout the charts, however, with the animated sequel Trolls Band Together in second.

Just behind that are a pair of action-packed adventures with Liam Hemsworth and Russell Crowe’s Land of Bad edging ahead of Eddie Murphy’s nostalgia-fuelled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, while Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron’s A Family Affair has started its downward trajectory after a strong couple of weeks.

Because it will never truly recede from the cultural spotlight, James Cameron’s Titanic has embarked on yet another voyage, sailing towards sixth spot on the charts, while Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy has reappeared based entirely on the fact it was adapted from the memoirs penned by Home Alone 2 and The Little Rascals star Donald Trump’s newfound associate JD Vance.

Paw Patrol: The Movie and The Super Mario Bros. movie strengthen the position of the animated contingent and have presumably driven more than a few parents to despair after being endlessly watched on repeat, but it’s another random assortment of titles to comprise Netflix’s ten biggest hits.

Spanning three decades and covering live-action, animation, romance, drama, comedy, thrills, action, and mundanity, the content library is a smorgasbord of randomness that reads like a fever dream in isolation. Of course, that’s kind of the point when Netflix is intended to offer something to cater to every taste, but Connick Jr headlining a number one hit on a major streamer surely wasn’t on the 2024 bingo card.
