A brand new year is now in full swing, and Netflix’s most popular chart reflects this. There is only one entry this week which has been on the chart for longer than four weeks as the streaming platform aims to add new titles and exciting oldies to grab more of its audience’s attention.
Of course, there is no change at the top. Rian Johnson’s murder mystery, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery continues to dominate the top spot for its third week running. Released during the festive break, the movie continues to grab fans, garnering a huge 44 million hours of viewing this week and becoming Netflix’s fifth most-watched original movie of all time.
The impact of Daniel Craig as detective and smooth southerner Benoit Blanc has sent shockwaves across the cinematic world. So much so that the first Johnson iteration of Knives Out is also on the chart, taking 7.5 million hours of viewing along the way. The mystery has been a game-changing addition to Netflix’s cyber shelves, and the movie, starring Edward Norton, Kate Hudson and many more, is a blockbuster event.
Elsewhere on the list there is the highly anticipated Edgar Allan Poe movie The Pale Blue Eye, starring Christian Bale. Set to be one of the best movies of the year, this may well topple Blanc and co. in the coming weeks, grabbing 42 million hours of viewing in its first week.
Other new entries on the chart this week include Honest Thief and Hard Target 2, which represent some of the more mediocre elements of Netflix’s roster. Each one is a hard-hitting action movie; they lack a little depth but are more than capable of facilitating a weekend movie binge.
Another more palatable action movie is Jumanji: The Next Level. Despite being naturally geared towards younger members of the family, the flick, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, is full of blistering action and quick-witted warmth. It has grabbed 17.5 million hours of viewing and only neatly beat Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical to the third spot.
