The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: February 2023

After 2022 brought Netflix some record-breaking and pop culture-influencing series, movies and moments, 2023 is looking to carry the torch on. The most popular films on the platform this week showcase both previous and updated material fans have been enjoying. 

At 65,610,000 viewing hours, Kenya Barris’s romantic-buddy comedy film You People takes the top spot. This comedy, written by Jonah Hill, stars him, Lauren London, David Duchovny, Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Eddie Murphy.

The story focuses on an interracial couple, how their families react to modern love, and the cultural clashes this type of relationship brings, including an examination of generational differences. 

Behind You People at 24,330,000 viewing hours is Pamela Anderson’s beautiful and insightful documentary Pamela, a love story. This touching film shows the pop culture icon taking back control of her own narrative, sharing details about her difficult childhood, her interesting rise to fame and the downsides a sexist society attempted to drag her down with. 

However, Anderson comes out strong as she lets viewers know the real her in the act of courage and love. “I’m not a victim, and I’m not the damsel in distress,” Anderson told Variety. “I’ve made my choices in my life. Some obviously were made for me, but I’ve always been able to find myself again. And it’s created a strong person and a strong parent.”

Some animated family features also appear on the top ten list this week. These include Minions: The Rise of Gru, the 2022 comedy adventure featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Pierre Coffin, Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, and Alan Arkin, showing how a young Gru came to be a supervillain. 

Flushed Away, released in 2006 and produced by Dreamworks and Aardman Animations, also appear on the list. This adventure comedy animation features voice work from Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen, Shane Richie, Bill Nighy, Andy Serkis and Jean Reno, telling the story of a privileged rat who battles against toads during the World Cup. 

Other list entries include Vaughn Stein’s thriller InheritanceGlass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, directed by Rian Johnson and the comic book adaptation Bloodshot
