The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: August 2024

Another week, another list of Netflix films that have proven to be a hit. The streaming giant continues its pursuit of entertaining the masses as classics are removed and added and the tide shifts on what people are choosing to watch. With that, new favourites begin to rise to the surface, reflecting entertainment at large at the moment and the product of random hits that come as a surprise. As always, it’s fun to dive into some of the best-performing films on the platform.

Netflix’s top ten list is an exciting blend of different genres and styles of movies. Some are Netflix originals, and others were shown elsewhere before being taken over to the platform. Regardless of your mood or what kind of movie you would like to watch, there will no doubt be something for you.

Taking the top spot and celebrating its second week in the top ten is Find Me Falling, a new Netflix original that follows rock star John Allman after a failed comeback. He moves to a remote Mediterranean island in the hope of finding his spark once again, but instead of having a nice breakaway, he is met with notoriety as his home attracts unwanted visitors and an old flame.

Just below that movie is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the sequel to the original released in 2023. It takes place in New York and sees Ghostbusters, new and old, bound together to save the city when an ancient artefact unleashes evil all over New York. The movie is an excellent hit of nostalgia and a lot of fun to watch.

For horror fans, the intense sequel Don’t Breathe 2 is also in the top ten. This film, which received mixed reviews from critics at the time of release, is proving to be a modern horror classic. Set eight years after the original, blind Navy SEAL, Norman Nordstrom lives with his daughter, Phoenix. When a gang tries to kidnap Phoenix, they see Nordstrom isn’t somebody you want to mess with.

Some other movies in the top ten include classics such as Titanic. No matter how many new movies are made, nothing beats sitting at home with popcorn and watching a classic film. There are also remakes of classics, such as Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which celebrates its fourth consecutive week in the Netflix top ten. For family nights, there are kids’ movies to watch as well, such as the exciting singalong Trolls Band Together.
