The ascendancy of The Gray Man is over as it continues to slip down the charts. However, the fact it continues to stick around and the impact it has certainly tells us a lot about our Netflix viewing habits. While the thrills and spills might have been middling in the eyes of the critics, punters enjoyed the easy switch-off entertainment all the same.
The same can be said of Day Shift which has secured the top spot for a second week. The film centres around Jamie Foxx in the lead role as a “hard-working, blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 10-year-old daughter. His mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires.”
Once more, Day Shift is far from Oscar bait, but its popularity is indicative of the fact that when we slump down to the couch, sometimes we just want casual cathartic entertainment. This might forecast a continuing trend for Netflix whereby easy excitement tops the bill and cinemas can have a share of the deeper outings.
The same can be said for the quirky throwback sci-fi madness with Look Both Ways. With a Freaky Friday feel, Lili Reinhart’s character finds her life thrown into turmoil. However, “on the eve of her college graduation, Natalie’s life diverges into parallel realities: one in which she becomes pregnant and remains in her hometown to raise her child and another in which she moves to LA to pursue her dream career.”
Competing for the rest of the top spots are the teen romance drama Purple Hearts, and the new surprising documentary Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist, while The Angry Birds Movie 2 also makes an appearance to prove that it’s certainly still summer holiday time for the kids.
