The Netflix charts are always a curious thing to peruse over a week. It not only gives you an idea of the streaming platform’s biggest releases but the surprise additions, which are clearly finding a new audience. The most popular films of the week offer a similar view with a smattering of new hits and classic titles.
One thing that should be said about this week’s top ten is that it is dominated by detectives. Half of the movies featured on the list involved either a detective, police officer or former high-level agent. Maybe the world is looking for a little law and order in these hectic times, or maybe there is just some high-quality cop content coming out.
The top three spots are occupied by detectives, though some are more capable than others. DI John Luther, from Luther: The Fallen Sun, has finally been toppled from his perch at the top of the most popular list, now sitting in third position with 12.7million hours of viewing this week. The gnarled detective has been pipped to the number two spot by a couple of little less qualified sleuths.
Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston star in Murder Mystery and Murder Mystery 2, which take up the second and first spots, respectively. The former, a madcap jaunt through Europe as the Spitz duo attempt to solve a series of high-profile murders and clear their name at the same time, is almost entirely replicated in the sequel.
However, that isn’t to say that the two movies aren’t enjoyable. Full of warm comedy and smirking referential jibes, Sandler and Aniston are a match made in heaven, made better by the brilliant soundtrack. The first movie took 24.7million hours of viewing this week, while the sequel was a far larger draw, bringing in 64.4million hours of viewing. It makes the chance of a third instalment of the detective duo all the more likely.
As well as the grizzled cops in Dragged Across Concrete, we see the former high-level agent Jason Bourne also make an appearance on the most popular list this week to complete the police-centric chart. The Bourne Legacy may not be the best Bourne movie, but it certainly packs a punch and should be considered to end the debate for any movie selection that goes on too long.
