Tis the season to watch movies and where better to look than Netflix? Every year, the streaming giant sees a spike in viewers around the festive season and clearly we’re all not necessarily lining up for tales of Santa or Scrouge.
Nope, the top spot at the moment is firmly occupied by Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Capitalising on the success of the previous outing, the draw of a detective Daniel Craig has lured in over 82 million viewing hours from the masses.
That lofty total far outstrips any of the other films on the list. The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari lingers in second place, but it has only amassed 25 million viewing hours, while Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio sits in third.
Thereafter, a string of Christmas content comes to the fore. New Netflix Originals rub shoulders with old classics like How the Grinch Stole Christmas in the mistletoe list. These faithful films have been grabbing viewers for weeks, however, as ever, the drop-off proves rapid from hereon.
This is where Netflix famously struggle to hit their usual high numbers. January can be a tricky month for any cultural outlet as we all head back to the grind, and the streaming service will hope new additions like Bullet Train can help pull them out of the late winter mire. Brad Pitt’s new film currently sits in ninth with 7.25 million viewing hours to its name.
However, it would seem that once more a whodunnit dominates the season. Glass Onion not only tops the bill this week but also it resides as one of the most-watched films in Netflix’s long-running history.
