‘Terror Comes Knocking: The Marcela Borges Story’: the true-crime movie storming the Netflix charts

Netflix has launched many fictional fireworks this year, including the record-breaking KPop Demon Hunters and Emmy-winning Adolescence. But what’s rising through the ranks on the global top ten most popular movies chart, Terror Comes Knocking: The Marcela Borges Story, is anything but fiction.

In the week of September 15th to September 21st, the Lifetime movie quietly sneaked into the Netflix charts, currently ranked tenth, after amassing 2.8million views.

With a runtime of an hour and 26 minutes, Terror Comes Knocking: The Marcela Borges Story premiered in January this year, starring Dascha Polanco, Johnathan Souza, and Nisa Gunduz, among others. The film, currently streaming on Netflix, revisits the terrifying true crime story that left Marcela Borges and her family scarred forever.

Terror Comes Knocking: The Marcela Borges Story recounts the night of November 15th, 2009, when Marcela Borges was at home in the gated community of Winter Garden, Florida, with her husband, Rubens Laureano Morais, watching television with her son, Ryan, while Morais worked in their home office. When the doorbell rang, the pair reportedly went together to open the door. But waiting for them out there was a living nightmare: three gunmen wearing masks (via Orlando Sentinel).

One of them fired a shot at the door, and another quickly grabbed Ryan, holding him at gunpoint, according to Morais’ statement to the investigators. Then, they thoroughly ransacked the house until they stumbled upon the safe, from which Borges and Morais were forced to take out $30,000. But turns out that the amount was not enough for the robbers to leave them on their own.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the armed robbers reportedly blindfolded the family and took them to a home in Apopka, where they were separated from each other. Although the intruders drove them back home the next morning, the nightmare was far from over. They coerced Marcela into visiting a bank and withdrawing an additional $23,600, of which she later informed the investigators that she was threatened and feared getting her family killed.

While Netflix’s true crime catalogue has always summoned the chills on spines, The Marcela Borges Story is probably unlike anything viewers have seen before. Terror Comes Knocking doesn’t just recall the devastating night; it also shows how the family managed to escape the hostage situation, all on their own. The story had garnered major public attention back in the day.

So, it makes sense that with Netflix bringing Borges’ side of the story, it has got the audience intrigued. However, those yet to find out the entire story, don’t forget to tune in to the Lifetime movie.
