Taron Egerton Joins Charlize Theron in Netflix Thriller ‘Apex’

Taron Egerton has been cast alongside Charlize Theron in the upcoming thriller Apex, directed by Baltasar Kormákur for Netflix.

Details of the plot are being kept under wraps, but the story follows a rock climber (played by Theron)  who finds out that she is being stalked in the wilderness by a psychopath (played by Egerton). The script was written by Jeremy Robbins, who also penned the screenplay for the TV adaptation of The Purge in 2018, which was picked up by Netflix as a spec script before attaching Kormákur to the project. This is a fairly unusual acquisition process for Netflix, which bought the script with only the producers attached, standing out as an original story.

The Icelandic director previously worked on Adrift, Everest and, more recently, Touch, a romantic thriller about a man who journeys to find a lost love from 50 years earlier. The film is also being produced by Theron, who has a string of pre-production credits to her name, including Bombshell, Mindhunter, and Monster, and she works extensively across all areas of film production. Theron is working with Dawn Olmstead, Beth Kono and AJ Dix to produce the project, under their recently launched company Secret Menu.

Theron’s most recent film as an actor was Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Fast X, with the actor working across production more regularly over the past few years. Theron currently has six projects in development and pre-production that she is overseeing as a producer, including Atomic Blonde 2, Two for the Money, Jane and Two Eyes Staring. The actor has worked with Netflix on multiple projects, such as The Old Guard and The School of Good and Evil.

Egerton first rose to fame in Matthew Vaughn’s comic book adaptation of Kingsman: The Secret Service, playing the role of ‘Eggsy’, a young man initiated into an undercover government agent scheme. Shortly after, he continued this success with Eddie the Eagle and the critically acclaimed Rocketman, with the actor playing Elton John in the biopic, earning a Golden Globe award for Best Actor.

Egerton recently finished filming the Apple TV+ series Firebug, which follows a detective who is trying to capture a serial arsonist. Before then, the actor will hit our screens in the upcoming Netflix thriller Carry On, released on December 13th and the indie thriller She Rides Shotgun, which Egerton also oversaw as a producer.
