‘Swapped’ ending explained: Inside the shocking villainous twist

Directed by Nathan Gerno from a script by John Whittington, Swapped is a buddy comedy on Netflix that has been making quite the noise on streaming.

Since premiering on May 1st, the Netflix comedy, produced by Skydance Animation, has become talk of the streaming town and for obvious reasons. Swapped starts out as a simple, light-hearted fantasy adventure, but it evolves into a deeply emotional story with the darkest plot twists.

The animated movie is set on a mysterious island where creatures live in separate spaces, complete with a group of sea otter-like creatures called Pookoo. When a young one from their group, Ollie, despite warnings from his parents and grandmothers, gives in to his curiosity, he stumbles across Ivy, a bird-like creature called a Javan. However, their encounter sets the primary conflict in notion, exploring their journey from swapping bodies to fighting the Fireworld.

Although this journey helps them understand what it’s actually like to be in the shoes of the other, Swapped culminates in a major villainous twist that no one sees coming. So, let’s take the wild recap.

What is the villainous twist of Swapped?

When Ollie and Ivy swap bodies in Swapped, what follows is a dawn of realisation, alongside chaos and a massive food crisis. While the situation finally allows them to see each other’s perspective clearly, they ultimately meet Boogle, a fish who offers to help them get out of the crisis. Initially, Boogle takes both to magical pods, promising to transform them back to their original forms.

But instead of that, they transform into a fish. However, Boogle still pledges to take them to more magical pods. Although the character might feel unsuspecting at first, the biggest shock is actually Boogle’s real identity. It turns out that he had been lying about his identity all this time. In fact, he’s actually the dangerous creature Ollie’s parents and grandparents had warned him about, the ‘Firewolf.’

Once weakened and left in isolation, the Firewolf sought power to reclaim control of the valley, unfortunately getting stuck in the body of a fish by Dzo creatures. As a result, to regain his actual identity, he acts as a trickster to Ollie and Ivy.

While there’s a lot more to the story than just the villainous arc, to know more about how things turn out for the valley creatures, tune into Swapped, now streaming on Netflix.
