‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ will come to Netflix later this year

Netflix has announced that Squid Game: The Challenge will come to the streaming service later this year. The new programme is a reality TV show based on the popular Korean drama Squid Game and will have contestants compete for a $4.56 million in several challenges inspired by the original series.

The new show will, of course, lack the fatal consequences of the original. Per a Netflix event in New York, we expect to have Squid Game: The Challenge on the streaming serive in November. Netflix stated, “The stakes are high, but in this game, the worst fate is going home empty-handed.”

Brandon Riegg, Netflix Vice President of Unscripted and Documentary Series, added, “Squid Game took the world by storm with director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment.”

The creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, also noted, “I know that there are some concerns of taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize. I would say that reproductions of such efforts are going to bring new meaning to the [entertainment] industry, and I hope that this is going to be a great new direction for the industry overall.”
