Netflix share trailer for ‘Squid Game’ season two
Ahead of its official release on December 26th, Netflix has finally unveiled the trailer for season two of Squid Game. The trailer gives an insight into the look and feel of the hotly anticipated series, succeeding in building excitement for fans of the South Korean thriller series and revealing key details about the plot of this new instalment.
Season one of Squid Game debuted on Netflix back in September 2021, immediately becoming one of the platform’s most popular shows. Following the story of 456 contestants who are all in debt or otherwise in dire need of money as they battle through deadly challenges in order to win a cash prize, those initial nine episodes of the show seemed to capture the minds of audiences all over the world.
In fact, Squid Game quickly became the platform’s most-watched programme of all time, surpassing Bridgerton and collecting numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe for supporting actor, won by O Yeong-su. To say that season two of the series has been eagerly awaited would, therefore, be a gross understatement.
The trailer for season two shows a return for protagonist Seong Gi-hun – portrayed by Lee Jung-Jae – as he comes up against the mysterious Front Man. However, the production also introduces various new cast members and characters into the Squid Game universe. Joining the cast are Yim Si-wan, Lee Jin-uk, Park Gyu-young, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Kang Ae-sim, Yang Dong-geun, and Jo Yu-ri among various others.
Having been in production since July 2023, the show’s creators have certainly had longer to perfect the second season than many Netflix productions are afforded. Reportedly, the new series will drastically increase the stakes from the last instalment, offering new character development and, of course, a new range of deadly games.
In the wake of the original series, Netflix wasted no time in capitalising on its success. Most notably, it inspired the reality television series Squid Game: The Challenge, which attracted a great deal of controversy after it was revealed many of the contestants had suffered real-world injuries and were not sufficiently taken care of by the producers.
More recently, Netflix also announced that an English-language version of Squid Game is in the early stages of production. At the time of writing, it is unclear just how closely this adaptation will replicate the original South Korean series.
Squid Game season two will be available to stream on Netflix worldwide from December 26th, 2024. Whether or not the series will be able to recapture the incredible success of its first instalment remains to be seen.
