‘Squid Game’ season three breaks a global record for Netflix
Squid Game was destined for greatness since its inception. And even with its farewell, it left a benchmark so high that everything on Netflix that comes after season three should watch out. It hasn’t even been a week since Squid Game’s curtain call. However, the third season has already taken over the world by a chart-topping storm.
According to Netflix, the much-awaited Squid Game season three has made history. It just became the first show ever to debut at number one in every country available, which is 93 in total. Within three days, the instalment has already garnered 60.1million from 368.4million hours viewed, shattering the most-viewed record for a show within that timeline.
In fact, the success of seasons two and three has catapulted Squid Game to become the most popular show on the list in its first week. Last week, Squid Game season two climbed the charts of non-English TV shows to number three with 2.8million views from 20.3million hours watched. The first season moved up to number six with 1.7million views from 14.3million hours of viewing.
Currently, all Squid Game seasons are ranked on the global top ten non-English TV shows chart, with the third season having achieved yet another milestone, becoming the ninth most-watched non-English TV show ever on Netflix. The frenzy was persistent from the get-go. And since its electrifying finale, the ripple effects have clearly impacted its previous instalments. However, the statistics only date back to three days.
It’s important to note that the fanaticism around Squid Game hasn’t slowed down with the season finale. If anything, the conversations have heightened. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk crafted a genius finale season. But since the rumour mill has spun regarding David Fincher’s Squid Game spin-off, the anticipation for more has gone off the radar. Although it remains to be seen whether the speculation churns out gold or coal, for now, the Netflix charts belong to Squid Game. And that too, for all the right reasons.
Succeeding Squid Game season three is last week’s Spanish chart-topper, Olympo. However, Squid Game is not the only South Korean title dominating the global top ten charts. The Korean magic is palpable on Netflix. Because even without the three Squid Game instalments, viewers will find two South Korean limited series on the list: Our Unwritten Seoul and Mercy for None.
Our Unwritten Seoul has been on the global top ten non-English TV shows chart for five weeks. This week alone, it has amassed 1.9million views. It is positioned at number five, just above Squid Game season one. Mercy for None was also a Netflix chart-topper the week before the last. Presently, it is ranked ninth with 1.7million views from 7.5million hours of viewing.
