‘Squid Game’ creator Hwang Dong-hyuk announces a casino crime-drama, ‘The Dealer’
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is getting ready for his next Netflix project, The Dealer, following the conclusion of his deadly survival drama earlier in 2025.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix reportedly confirmed on Wednesday in South Korea that production has begun on the new original series, produced by Dong-hyuk, and led by a star-studded cast, featuring Jung So-min and Ryoo Seung-bum, among others.
Described as a “high-stakes casino crime drama,” the upcoming show serves as the series directorial debut of cinematographer Choi Young-hwan, best known for his work in Smugglers, Veteran, Tazza: The High Rollers, and The Thieves. As per the tabloid, Dong-hyuk is producing The Dealer for his production company, Firstman Studio, which also produced Squid Game.
The Dealer follows a deft casino dealer, Geonhwa, whose life comes crashing down when her wedding plans are upended due to her links with a housing scam. As she’s forced back into the world she once voluntarily left behind, Geonhwa finds herself succumbing deeper into the dangerous underworld of illegal gambling.
Consequently, she’s obliged to tap the long-suppressed supernatural abilities that give her an uncanny advantage at the tables as she fights to reclaim the control of her life and future.
Jung So-min stars as Geonhwa, whom you might be familiar with from Love Reset, Alchemy of Souls, or Love Next Door. Netflix describes this role as a “sharp departure” from the roles in which she has been previously seen, portraying a woman who has spent a long time concealing and suppressing powers that could turn the tables in her favour at any given point in time.
Meanwhile, Ryoo Seung-bum plays Hwang Chisu, a financially desperate high roller who’s making ends meet one bet at a time, who also finds himself entangled in Geonhwa’s dangerous scheme. As for Lee Soo-hyuk, he portrays Jo Jun, a cunning casino player known for his calm and collected instincts and indecipherable poker face, which makes him a genuine and inevitable threat in the gameplay.
Lastly, Ryu Kyung-soo stars as Choi Wooseung, Geonhwa’s fiancé, a patient partner who doubles as a clever detective. As it turns out, he has been concealing his identity all this time.
Although Netflix has remained tight-lipped so far about the rumoured developments surrounding a potential US-based spin-off of Squid Game following Cate Blanchett’s appearance in the series finale, at least for now, fans can look forward to The Dealer restoring the thrills.
