‘Squid Game’ actors star in Netflix’s 'The Silent Sea' trailer

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming sci-fi thriller show The Silent Sea that will be starring Squid Game actors Heo Sung-tae and Gong Yoo.

According to the ominous official synopsis of the show, it will be set in “an abandoned lunar base” involving “a mission with a 10% survival rate” where the crew members will slowly meet their fatal doom with the progression of the narrative.

The teaser is pretty riveting and shows a handful of astronauts landing on the moon to explore the Balhae Lunar research station that has been abandoned for quite some time. To help secure the future of Earth which is on its way towards inevitable doom, they need to collect a sample that might help them in this mission.

Gong Yoo’s deep baritone can be heard saying, “It’s like any other mission. We just have to do as we’re told.” However, things quickly get out of hand and the crew is met with strange and sinister events.

This eight-episode series will be directed by Choi Hang-yong who is popular for the 2014 short film The Sea of Tranquility. The director has derived inspiration from his previous film to expand on the idea in the show.

Actor Jung Woo-sung who was seen in films like Steel Rain and A Moment to Remember is executive producing the series. The Silent Sea will be starring Song Ji-an, Lee Joon, Kim Sun-young and Lee Moo-saeng besides Gong Yoo and Heo Sung-tae.

Gong Yoo, known for his exhilarating film Train to Busan and various other K-drama titles, was last seen in Squid Game as a mysterious man clad in a suit who lures the main protagonist into partaking in the game. Heo Sung-tae also starred in the Hwang Dong-hyuk series as the main antagonist, the brutal and vile Jang Deok-su.

With the increased interest in Korean films and TV series followed by the overpowering Korean wave induced by Squid Game, the streaming giant has seen massive success in terms of popularity and viewer ratings, most recently for Yeon Sang-ho’s Hellbound.

The Silent Sea looks pretty promising and is slated for a December 24, 2021 premiere.
