‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’: the animated superhero movie rising through the ranks

The appetite for animated titles is growing by the day on Netflix, and standing tall as proof on the most popular movies chart across the globe is the first animated movie in the Spider-Man franchise, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

In the week from December 29th to January 4th, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse didn’t just sneak into the global charts at number eight; it cosied up like it completely belongs.

The film earned 3.4million views this week as the top ten title on Netflix, and if it’s any help, in the US, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is ranked second on the most popular movies chart.

For those out of the loop, Netflix quietly re-added Into the Spider-Verse to its US library in early January. Unlike most monthly additions, of which we get a hunch weeks in advance, this was a stealth drop that caught fans by surprise. But the rise on the charts is definitely not a coincidence.

The film’s shot-up through the ranks is driven by the perfect mix of new project announcements, algorithmic serendipity, superhero nostalgia, and, of course, a surprise return to streaming. Not to forget that the resurgence also has a lot to do with the massive wave of news surrounding upcoming Spider-Man projects, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Co-directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsay, and Rodney Rothman, the Oscar-winning film follows Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales, who suddenly gains superpowers in the aftermath of being bitten by a radioactive spider. While the insect-attack turns him into the one and only Spider-Man, the Marvel Comics superhero we all know and love, it’s not before he meets Peter Parker that he truly understands that there are more like him.

But now that Miles has the superpowers, he must find a way to defeat the malevolent Kingpin, a terrifying threat who can open portals to other universes and diverse timelines to pull out different versions of Spider-Man into his world.

Considering this is a season of comfort watches, the addition of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is tactical because it easily fits into that palette. Likewise, given that the movie was largely seen as an antidote to superhero fatigue, it’s not exactly a shocker that the “Spider-Verse” brand remains a massive draw for the audience even today.

From unblemished craftsmanship to stunning execution, each and every aspect of Into the Spider-Verse adds to the entertainment. But if you’re yet to make sense of the craze, the superhero film is currently streaming on Netflix. So, you can be your own judge!
