Sofia Vergara may have made her name as part of the impressive ensemble cast of Modern Family, portraying Gloria, a wise-cracking Colombian who is married to patriarch Jay, but she’s now taking on a much juicer role for a new Netflix production.
Starring as Gloria, Vergara made herself a household name. Contained within a highly polished sitcom, Gloria was quick-witted, fiercely intelligent and always flecked with an element of danger. However, in her new role as real-life drug lord Griselda Blanco, Vergara looks to have met her match.
The new Netflix drama Griselda will see Vergara take on the titular role and undergo a huge transformation to do so. Developed by the people who brought you Narcos, namely Eric Newman, the project will explore the life and work of Blanco — one of the most profitable leaders of a drug cartel ever.
Running drugs between America and Colombia, Blanco earned herself the nicknames of La Madrina and the Black Widow, both of which provide a clear narrative for Vergara’s character. One of the richest and most dangerous women on the planet before she was shot dead last year at age 69, Blanco’s story is a fascinating one.
Included in the supporting cast are Alberto Guerra from Narcos, Vanessa Ferlito, Alberto Ammann, Christian Tappan, Diego Trujillo, Paulin Dávila and Gabriel Soyer among many more.
The project will not only see Vergara star in the show but take on the role of an executive producer too, alongside Newman and Andrés Baiz, who will direct all six episodes of the series.
