‘Should I Marry a Murderer?’: Where are the McKellar brothers now?
Should I Marry a Murderer is one of those Netflix documentaries that makes people want to pull up their guard forever, and understandably so.
Directed by Josh Allot, the three-episode docu-series features forensic pathologist Dr Caroline Muirhead, who recounts how she nearly married a man with a murderous past, Sandy McKellar.
As is shown in Should I Marry a Murderer?, currently streaming on Netflix, Muirhead stumbled across McKellar on Tinder after getting out of a long-term relationship. They hit it off on the first date itself, and just a few months into dating, McKellar proposed to her.
She accepted the proposal despite concerns from friends and family about moving too fast. However, before making things official, she urged him to confide in her anything and everything that she should know about him.
It is then that the unthinkable happened to Muirhead as McKellar confessed to killing a man three years before meeting her. On September 29th, 2017, McKellar was allegedly driving home from a party with his twin brother, Robert, when he ran over a cyclist, who, he claimed, had died instantaneously. Driven by panic and fear, the McKellar brothers had reportedly disposed of the body on the 28,000-acre farm where they worked and lived.
Taken aback by the confession Muirhead didn’t see coming, she decided to find out who the cyclist was, and it turns out, the victim was a war veteran and cancer survivor whose family were still searching for answers.
Although she was already torn about handling the situation, knowing well that she would have to turn her fiancé in, things took a darker turn when he, in turn, asked for her help to move the body, citing that the estate was soon going to be turned into condos and the land where they buried him would be excavated. Upon reaching the spot, she decided to mark the place with a Red Bull can.
The McKellar brothers were arrested a few days later, but they were released soon after due to a lack of evidence. However, Muirhead had to gather information until there was enough evidence to put him behind bars while staying engaged.
The McKellar brothers were eventually arrested, and in 2023, Sandy pleaded guilty to culpable homicide. He was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment, while Robert was sentenced to five years and three months for obstruction of justice. As of now, they are serving out their sentences.
