The scandalous Netflix thriller is captivating audiences

Just last week, Charlize Theron’s Award-winning film Monster, based on the life of a notorious woman serial killer named Aileen Wuornos, was soaring Netflix charts. This week, yet another scandalous and scary thriller about the same serial killer has attracted the attention of viewers and has reached the most-watched list.

The 2021 film Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeyman came to Netflix in the United States in January 2022. It revolves around the life of the eponymous serial killer, however, with a twist. The story lets the narrative run wild and stray far from the true events.

Starring Peyton List, Tobin Bell, Lydia Hearst and others, directed by Daniel Farrands, the film sees what happens when Wuornos gets married to an affluent yacht club president.

Grappling with bloodlust, Wuornos unleashes chaos and mayhem within the new family and the Floridian high society.

A wonderful and seamless blend of crime and horror, the trailer begins with a spine-chilling declaration, when she says, “I guess I always did dream of being famous.” Wuornos goes on to say, “I didn’t take no crap from nobody. ‘Specially men.”

While Theron shaved her eyebrows, gained weight and went all out for the spine-chilling role of the notorious serial killer, List retains the fictional value.

Naturally, it is much flimsier and far more scandalous than the original – with taboo relationships, manipulation and violence – and it did not receive a good reception from critics and viewers alike on release. However, as is so often the way, Netflix viewers seem to be loving it as the film has climbed up the charts.
