Sarah Paulson confirms 'Ratched' cancellation

It has been confirmed that the Netflix series Ratched will not return for a second series. The show was a prequel to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which followed the life of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched.

A video of Sarah Paulson, who plays Nurse Ratched, was posted onto a fan account on X. On it, Paulson is asked whether or not the series will return for a season two, to which she responds, “No.”

Despite the first series coming out in 2020 and doing relatively well, no official word was given on the programme’s future. In 2022, Paulson said she was unsure whether there would be a second series, but it now looks like viewers have a much more definite answer.

The series was set in 1947 and followed Ratched’s arrival in North California, seeking employment in a psychiatric hospital. She ends up working at a hospital that is using unsettling experiments on patients and thus begins the story as Nurse Ratched tries to infiltrate the mental health system.

The character was initially made famous by Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the big-screen adaption of the 1962 novel written by Ken Kesey. Her portrayal of the role earned Fletcher an Academy Award.

In addition to Sarah Paulson, the Netflix series featured appearances from Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone and Finn Wittrock. No other actors from the series have commented on the show’s future.
