‘Rurouni Kenshin’ is returning this October with a second season

Anime lovers, it’s time to turn back time. Rurouni Kenshin is officially returning with a second season this October, scheduled to be available on Netflix in multiple regions.

Set in the Meiji era of Japan, Rurouni Kenshin tells the story of a travelling swordsman, Kenshin Himura, who comes to Tokyo in 1878. Netflix acquired this show earlier in February for regions in the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, Latin America, and South Africa.

Previously, the anime series was exclusively available on Crunchyroll. So, the acquisition was already a shocker in itself. But considering Netflix has been home to all the live-action movies of the franchise since 2012, including the trilogy, this move was not exactly exempt from the bingo card.

Season two is already available on Netflix in the Asian sub-continent, thanks to Japan’s simulcasting it, and South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore picking the season up right after. But the arrival arc on Netflix comes a year after its original release in late 2024, as Crunchyroll had the first-run rights for the series in the US.

Since the Netflix acquisition in newer regions in 2025, Rurouni Kenshin peaked with 1.8million views. As for the whereabouts and details of the new season, all episodes will be available in countries, including the US and the UK, on October 4th (via What’s On Netflix).

In the second season, Kenshin journeys to Kyoto on his own, declining the help from Saitō to ensure there are no further victims. Although Sanosuke tails him, Saitō stops him midway and defeats him, only to let him go eventually. Meanwhile, Megumi requests Kaoru to honour the dojo, giving her the medicine for Kenshin, while comforting her. And Yahiko ultimately compels Kaoru to pursue Kenshin, jogging their memory that if anyone can, it’s only she who can bring him back.

AnimeJapan confirmed Rurouni Kenshin’s renewal for a third season earlier in March. However, the details remain tightly guarded as of now. So, stay tuned for further updates!
