Rules of the games in ‘Squid Game’ season three

Games took a real dark turn with Squid Game on Netflix. Despite the lower count of events in the third season, the audience got a blow of spine-chilling suspense at every deadly twist and turn. The line between fun and fatal was blurred long before. However, season three upped the stakes, left viewers breathless, and even with just a few games remaining, it had them sweating long after the end.

Before Squid Game’s third season was released, we had a warm-up recap of the games from seasons one and two. And now that the South Korean survival drama has officially concluded, let’s take a trip down the lanes of the twisted games one last time. Hwang Dong-hyuk borrowed the concept of deadly entertainment from traditional children’s play. However, they came with a sinister twist of their own.

From ddakji to Russian roulette, the show turned playtime perilous. The games went from sugar sweet to deathly sinister in the blink of an eye. So much so that even the teeth-sinking, horrific Child’s Play franchise has got nothing on the nerves Squid Game brought in the name of games.

For those who need a refresher, here is a look back at the games played in the final season with their rules.

What were the rules of the games in Squid Game season three?

Hide and Seek

No matter how simple the name sounds, in Squid Game, everything comes with its fair share of deadly masquerades. Similarly, the first game of the third season, Hide and Seek, lived up to its predecessors. In this, every player is invited to a waiting room where each must take a gumball, half of which are red and the other half blue. The colours decide which player belongs to which team. In case of red, the players are “Seekers”, while blue implies “Hiders”.

Hide and Seek takes place in a disorienting, utterly confusing maze where the Seekers must find at least one Hider and eliminate them. If a Seeker fails to kill a blue team contestant, they must face the consequences, which is also death. Meanwhile, Hiders must hide or exit through a door in order to succeed. Seekers are equipped with knives for the round, and Hiders hold the keys for the doors in the maze.

Any player can jump teams before the play starts if the opposing side members agree to it. It’s almost like the Maze Runner round of Takashi’s Castle, except Squid Game brings death on its coattails with defeat.

Jump Rope

Everyone knows the rules of Jump Rope in real life, and the show doesn’t take much away from the original concept. The only difference is that the latter version comes with an inevitable death note, as is customary. The rules are not very complicated for this one, as players must cross a walkway from one side to the other within 20 minutes without falling off the platform.

What raises the stakes, though, is that Young-hee and Chul-su are right above the walkway, operating a colossal metallic jump rope instead of the jump rope viewers are used to playing with. The only way to cross the rope is to jump over it. But in case one falters, second chances are unlikely.

Sky Squid Game

Sky Squid Game was the final round of the third season, which would help decide the winner. Players are placed on top of three towers, the first shaped like a square, the second a triangle, and the third a circle. But unlike the rules of Jump Rope, Sky Squid Game is perplexing, even for the former Squid Game champion, Seong Gi-hun.

In order to qualify and advance from one tower to another, contestants need to ensure that they push off at least one player. However, upon reaching the second and third towers, deaths only count when a player presses a button laid on the ground, which sets off a timer. If the time runs out and no one is eliminated, it’s game over for everyone.

But what happens when someone forgets to press the button? Well, the Squid Game finale holds all the answers. However, do not try these at home, at least not the show’s version.
