Ricky Gervais announces Netflix comeback with ‘Alley Cats,’ a new adult animated series
Comedian Ricky Gervais is all set for a Netflix comeback. This time, he’s about to cause a laughter riot with a bunch of feral felines in his new adult animated series, Alley Cats.
Created by Emmy-winning Gervais, best known for his work on After Life and Extras, will be released on Netflix in 2026. Netflix additionally dropped a first-look image to tease what’s to come.
With six episodes, Alley Cats is dubbed a “slacker sitcom,” which revolves around the hardships and difficulties of a ragtag squad of feral British cats, who each come from different vocations and occupations. As they contemplate their daily lives, they simultaneously crave companionship.
Gervais doesn’t just serve as the director and creator for Netflix’s Alley Cats. He’s also one of the voices of the cats. The Netflix adult animated comedy series marks his reunion with many of his on-screen collaborators from the past, including Tom Basden, Andrew Brooke, David Earl, Kerry Godliman, Jo Hartley, and Diane Morgan. Additionally, Alley Cats features Natalie Cassidy and Tony Way.
In a statement, Gervais opened up about his role, “I play a fat, lazy, rude, opinionated creature with fangs, who’s not as smart or brave as he thinks he is. So quite a stretch.”
The comedian and actor is co-directing the Netflix series with Elliot Dear, with animation from award-winning studio Blink Industries based in the UK. Moreover, Gervais executive produces Alley Cats for Derek Productions with Steven Hamilton Shaw of Shush Creative. The production designer is Tang Heng.
Alley Cats serves Gervais’s return as a creator on TV for the first time since Netflix’s black comedy series, After Life. It ran for three instalments from 2019 to 2022. Most recently, he voiced Flippy the Fish, a cyborg butterfly fish with the power of telekinesis in Dog Man. But knowing the frenzy surrounding Netflix’s adult animated slate, the upcoming comedy series will definitely be the one to watch out for.
Alley Cats also marks Gervais’s comeback to the adult animation scene, 13 years after HBO and Channel 4’s The Ricky Gervais Show. It served as the animated rendition of Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington’s podcast, which featured Hannah Barbara era cartoons. Speaking of the upcoming series, Netflix teased that the show is “packed with Gervais’s signature style of heart and social commentary.”
While the release date remains under wraps, fans must stay tuned for further updates in the future.
