Netflix has ordered another animated series. This time, the series will be produced by several team members behind the hit comedy Rick and Morty.
The Undervale is the product of creator and showrunner Matt Roller, who previously wrote for Adult Swin and is currently the co-executive producer on Krapopolis. Also helping with the programme are Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon and executive producer Steve Levy. Chris McKenna is also helping write the series, who previously had success with the blockbuster smash Spider-Man: No Way Home. Another Rick and Mortyalumni, Erica Hayes, will be the supervising director of the new series.
The director of the adult animation, Billy Wee, commented on the series recently, saying (as per The Hollywood Reporter), “The Undervale is wildly inventive, and I’m very grateful to Matt, Chris, Dan and their team for bringing their talents to Netflix.” He continued, “They are phenomenal collaborators, and I can’t wait for fans all over the world to experience this hilarious show.”
Though much about the series is still being kept under wraps, it is understood that it is about a mother of two who runs a haunted hotel. Her deceased brother helps her keep things running and wants his sister to pay more attention to the ghosts, who he believes have some good ideas.
Matt Roller spoke about the series, saying, “I’m thrilled to be working with Netflix and an amazingly talented cast and crew to bring to life the stories of the dead, the evil and the struggling hospitality workers at the Undervale Hotel.”
Roller and Harmon have worked together a number of times in the past, both on Rick and Morty and the cult classic comedy Community. Roller is more than capable of putting together an excellent comedy, as his credits also include Archer, Agent Elvis and Speechless.
